인공지능(AI) 기반 의사학 자료 분석의 가능성과 한계에 대한 시범적 검토: 1876~1965년 『의방유취』 관련 인식 변화 탐구

A Pilot Assessment of the Possibilities and Limitations of AI-Based Analysis for Medical-Historical Texts: Investigating Shifts in Perceptions of Uibangyuchwi (1876–1965)

본 연구는 AI를 시험적으로 활용하여 1876~1965년 『의방유취』에 대한 근현대 담론의 변화 흐름을 분석한 것이다. 신문·학술지·국가기록 등 총 39건의 자료를 기반으로 정성·정량 분석을 수행한 결과, 『의방유취』는 외교적 선물에서 학술·민족 자산, 나아가 한의학 정통성의 근거로 의미가 확장되어 왔음을 확인하였다. 동시에 AI 활용 과정에서 자료 접근의 제약, 낮은 OCR 인식률, 환각 현상 등 기술적 한계도 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 의사학을 비롯한 한의인문학 연구에서 AI 활용의 가능성과 과제를 함께 제시하였다.

This study experimentally applied AI to analyze the modern and contemporary discursive shifts surrounding Uibangyuchwi from 1876 to 1965. Drawing on thirty-nine sources—including newspapers, academic journals, and governmental records—we conducted qualitative and quantitative analyses with AI assistance. The results show that Uibangyuchwi gradually expanded in meaning: from a diplomatic gift to a scholarly and national asset, and ultimately to a foundation for asserting the historical legitimacy of Korean medicine. At the same time, the research process revealed clear technological limitations of current AI tools, including restricted access to materials, low OCR accuracy, and hallucination phenomena. Through these findings, the study identifies both the potential and the key challenges of employing AI in medical history and broader humanities research within Korean medicine.
