A Study on the Economic Effects of Restoration of Inter-Korean Railway

본 연구는 2000년부터 2025년까지의 남북 철도 관련 방대한 논문과 자료를 대상으로 심층적인 서술형 문헌 연구를 수행하여, 남북 철도 협력의 핵심 이슈를 도출하고 이에 대한 실질적인 발전방안을 모색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 특히, 동북아시아 3대 경제권(한국, 중국, 일본)의 글로벌 경제적 위상을 고려할 때, 남북 철도 연결은 한반도와 역내 경제 활성화에 있어 전략적 중요성을 가진다. 글로벌 운송 수요의 지속적인 증가 추세와 이로 인해 야기되는 물류 수단의 변화 및 운임 급등 현상이 남북 철도 협력의 전략적 필요성을 강화하는 중요한 거시적 배경을 제공하고 있으며 이러한 현상은 단순한 경제적 변동을 넘어, 미래 물류 시스템의 지속 가능성 및 효율성을 재고하는 학문적 근거가 된다. 한국이 전 세계 물동량의 약 10%를, 중국이 약 35%를 감당한다는 통계는 동북아시아 3대 경제권(한국, 중국, 일본)이 글로벌 무역의 핵심 축임을 증명한다. 전 세계 물동량의 절반 가까이가 이 지역에 집중되어 있다는 것은, 이 지역 물류 시스템의 효율성이 글로벌 공급망 안정성과 직결됨을 의미하는 것이다. 본 연구는 한반도의 복잡한 정치적, 경제적 문제를 효과적으로 접근, 개선하기 위한 다양한 전략적 방법을 제안한다. 또한, 본 연구는 그간의 연구 동향을 바탕으로 한반도의 미래 전략에 대한 중요한 경제적, 정치적 통찰력을 제공하고자 한다. 그러나 본 연구 역시 본질적인 한계점을 내포하고 있기에, 이를 극복하고 연구의 깊이를 더할 수 있도록 향후 연구에 대한 구체적인 방향과 제언을 함께 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study is to conduct in-depth descriptive literature research on extensive papers and materials related to the inter-Korean railway from 2000 to 2025, to derive key issues in inter-Korean railway cooperation and explore practical ways to develop them. In particular, considering the global economic status of the three largest economies in Northeast Asia (Korea, China, and Japan), the North-South railway connection has strategic importance in revitalizing the Korean Peninsula and the region’s economy. The continuous increase in global transportation demand and the resulting changes in logistics means and the sharp rise in freight rates provide an important macroscopic background for strengthening the strategic need for inter-Korean railway cooperation. This phenomenon goes beyond simple economic fluctuations and is an academic basis for reconsidering the sustainability and efficiency of future logistics systems. Statistics showing that Korea accounts for about 10% of the world’s volume of goods and that China accounts for about 35% prove that the three largest economies in Northeast Asia (Korea, China, and Japan) are key pillars of global trade. The fact that nearly half of the world’s cargo volume is concentrated in this region means that the efficiency of the logistics system in this region is directly linked to the stability of the global supply chain. This study proposes various strategic methods for effectively approaching and improving complex political and economic issues on the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, this study aims to provide important economic and political insight into the future strategy of the Korean Peninsula based on current research trends. However, since this study also contains essential limitations, we also proposed specific directions and suggestions for future research to overcome them and add depth to the research.
