A Qualitative Study on the Organizational Adaptation of Foreign Graduate Students in Science and ngineering: Focusing on the Perceptions of Members of Multicultural Research Laboratories

This study analyzes the organizational adaptation process of foreign graduate students in science and engineering laboratories. In-depth interviews were conducted with supervisors, domestic graduate students, and foreign graduate students to examine adaptation across personal, social, and academic domains. Members of multicultural research laboratories reported individual adjustment challenges experienced by foreign students, including issues related to food, religion, and research culture. Social adjustment difficulties were also identified, such as role assignments and communication within laboratories. In addition, foreign students faced academic challenges, including writing research proposals and reports. Establishing English as the common language and defining fair, transparent roles between foreign and domestic students were found to reduce these conflicts. This study provides a balanced analysis of organizational adaptation in multicultural research laboratories and is expected to contribute to the development of more inclusive research culture.
