택배기사의 직업정체성 형성과정에 관한 현상학적 연구

A Phenomenological Study on the Formation Process of Parcel Delivery Workers’ Vocational Identity

본 연구는 우리나라 특수형태 근로자인 택배기사들이 자신의 직업을 어떻게 인식하고 그 의미를 부여하며, 그 과정에서 직업정체성을 어떻게 형성해 가는지를 현상학적 방법으로 탐구하였다. 택배 산업은 COVID‑19 이후 폭발적인 성장과 함께 사회적으로 필수적인 서비스로 자리매김하였으나, 택배기사들은 여전히 불안정한 법적 지위와 낮은 사회적 평가 속에 놓여 있다. 이에 본 연구는 이러한 구조적 한계 속에서 택배기사의 직업 경험을 중심으로 직업정체성 형성과정을 탐색하고, 그 속에서 드러나는 직업의 의미를 심층적으로 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 택배기사 13명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하고, 참여관찰된 자료를 보조적으로 활용하였다. 수집된 자료는 Giorgi의 기술적 현상학적 방법으로 분석하였으며, 그 결과 93개의 의미 있는 진술, 22개의 드러난 주제, 9개의 본질적 주제가 도출되었다. 본질적 주제는 ‘절박함이 있어야 할 수 있는 일’, ‘편견의 불편함’, ‘녹록치 않은 직업현실’, ‘밀려드는 헛헛한 마음’, ‘내면과 마주하게 된 자화상’, ‘적응을 위한 전략’, ‘땀과 노동의 가치 재발견’, ‘나를 지탱해 주는 든든한 버팀목’, ‘택배 상자에 담긴 꿈’으로 나타났다. 연구참여자들은 절박한 생계의 현실 속에서 유일한 선택지로 택배 노동시장에 진입하였으며, 사회적 무시와 폄하를 경험하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 이들은 직업을 지속하기 위해 부정적 인식에 대응하는 전략을 통해 직업을 단순한 생계 수단이 아닌 삶의 재건과 자기 실현의 기회로 재정의하였다. 나아가 자신의 일에 의미와 가치를 부여하며 자부심을 형성함으로써 직업의 가치를 재구성하는 모습을 보였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 택배기사의 직업경험이 직업정체성 형성에 미치는 영향, 직업정체성 형성과정에서의 혼란과 위기 극복, 그리고 택배기사로의 직업정체성 형성과정에 관한 구체적 논의와 제언을 제시하였다.

This study explored, from a phenomenological perspective, how parcel delivery workers, who are classified as special‑type workers, perceive their occupation, assign meaning to it, and form their vocational identity in the process. Although the parcel delivery industry has grown explosively since COVID‑19 and has been recognized as an essential social service, delivery workers still face structural limitations such as unstable legal status and low social evaluation. In this context, the study examined the process by which delivery workers’ occupational experiences influence the formation of vocational identity and deeply explored the essence and meaning of their occupation revealed through those experiences. For this purpose, in‑depth interviews were conducted with 13 parcel delivery workers, and participant observation was used as supplementary data. The data collected were analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method, and the results yielded 93 meaningful statements, 22 revealed themes, and 9 essential themes. The essential themes were: ‘A job possible only out of desperation,’ ‘Discomfort of prejudice,’ ‘Harsh occupational reality,’ ‘Lingering emptiness,’ ‘Self‑portrait confronting the inner self,’ ‘Strategies for adaptation,’ ‘Rediscovery of the value of sweat and labor,’ ‘Reliable sources of support,’ and ‘Dreams contained in delivery boxes.’ The participants entered the parcel delivery labor market as the only option in desperate circumstances and experienced social disregard and devaluation. Nevertheless, to continue their work, they employed strategies to cope with negative perceptions and redefined their occupation not as a mere means of livelihood but as an opportunity for life reconstruction. Furthermore, they assigned meaning and value to their work, built pride, and reconstructed the value of their occupation. Based on these results, the study presented specific discussions and suggestions regarding the influence of delivery workers’ occupational experiences on vocational identity formation, the confusion and crisis resolution within that formation process, and the process of forming their vocational identity as parcel delivery workers.
