미군정기 국내 상담학의 형성 배경

Formation of Counseling Studies during the U.S. Military Government Period in Korea

본 연구의 목적은 미군정기 교육사상에서 유래되었다고 보는 국내 상담학의 형성 배경에 관한 역사적 분석과 시사점 도출에 있다. 선행 연구 분석으로 세계사적 패러다임의 전환, 국제사회의 담론 형성과 경쟁, 정치적 의사소통 방식이 연구 문제로 제기되었고, 이를 중심으로 문헌 고찰을 시도하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미군정기 국내 상담학은 산업화에서 비롯된 세계적 패러다임 대전환의 결과에서 출발한다. 그것은 미군정기의 과학적 교육체계로, 여기에는 사회문제에 관한 서구적 인식틀의 이식 과정을 내포한다. 둘째, 미군정기 국내 상담학은 과학의 성원권을 얻은 심리학의 공헌과 이를 활용한 우생학적 담론이 공조한 미군정기 교육적 아이디어를 배경 삼는다. 사회 발전 가치에 따라 인간의 특성을 통제하고 행동양식을 구속하는 의도는 분명 반성 되어야 한다. 셋째, 미군정기 국내 상담학에서 생활지도는 사회 안정을 보장하는 민주사회의 언어와 소통 체계를 체화하도록 구성된 전환교육 차원의 비교과 교육과정으로 이해된다. 이는 국내 상담학의 토대가 되는 생활지도가 소통과 상호작용의 중요성을 강조하는 상담적 방법을 취하며 발달한 이유로도 파악된다. 마지막으로, 오늘날 국내 상담학의 과제를 제시하였다.

This study aims to conduct a historical analysis of and derive implications from the background of the origin of counseling studies in Korea, which is considered to have emerged from the educational philosophy of the U.S. military government period in Korea. The key research issues identified through a literature review encompass the transformation of global historical paradigms, and construction of discourses, competition, and modes of political communication within the international community. The analysis reveals the following. First, counseling studies in Korea originated during the U.S. military government period as part of a global paradigm shift brought about by industrialization. The scientific education system established during the U.S. occupation entailed the transplantation of Western frameworks to understand social issues. Second, the development of counseling studies in this period was grounded in the educational ideas promoted by the U.S. military government, which were shaped by the rise of psychology as a recognized scientific discipline and its intersection with eugenic discourse. The intention to regulate human characteristics and constrain behavioral patterns according to perceived values of social development must be critically reconsidered. Third, in the context of domestic counseling during the U.S. military occupation period, guidance was a form of transitional education embedded in the extracurricular curriculum, designed at internalizing the linguistic and communicative system of a democratic society that upholds social stability. This also explains why guidance, which constitutes the foundation of counseling in Korea, developed by adopting counseling methods that emphasize the importance of communication and interaction. Finally, this study identifies and discusses the current challenges confronting counseling studies in Korea.
