조덕린은 조선 후기 노론 집권 세력에 의해 정치적으로 고난받았던 영남 지역의 학자 가운데 한 사람이다. 그의 생애가 그럴 뿐만 아니라 남아있는 작품으로 보았을 때도 역시 그렇다. 따라서 그를 조선 후기 당대 노론 집권 세력에 의해 고난받았던 영남 지역의 학자를 대표하는 한 사람이라고 보는 것이 타당하다. 남아 전하는 기록이나 그가 남긴 문집으로 보았을 때 이런 평가는 부정할 수 없다. 그러나 그렇다고 해서 그가 창작한 문학 작품을 도외시하는 것은 정당한 태도가 될 수 없다. 불과 244수에 지나지 않는 그의 시는 감정을 이면에 감추어 감상적이기보다 이성적이지만, 그의 시는 그가 느낀 감정을 진솔하게 있는 그대로 보여준다. 무미건조해 보이기까지 하지만, 그 속에는 그의 감정이 고스란히 담겨 있다. 그가 추구했던 주지적이고 이지적인 이미지 중심의 표현 기법은 그의 시를 평면적으로 만든다. 그러나 소리를 억제하고 역동적인 표현을 배제한 그의 시는 화려하지 않지만 더 깊은 울림을 준다. 조덕린의 시를 보면 그의 시가 그의 삶과 같은 궤에 있는 것으로, 문학적 성과보다 삶의 진실을 담고자 하는 시라는 것을 알 수 있다. 그래서인지 조덕린의 시에 드러나는 감정은 진폭이 크지 않다. 그러나 급격한 파동을 타고 격렬한 파장을 그리지 않는 그의 시가 오히려 더 깊고 긴 여운을 보여준다. 조덕린의 시를 보면 그의 시가 문학적 성과보다 삶의 진실을 담고자 하는 시라는 것을 알 수 있다. 또 그의 시가 일정한 성취를 보인 것은 분명하지만, 그의 시는 문인의 시라기보다는 수양된 인격을 지닌 학자의 시로 보는 것이 타당하고, 그는 작가 의식을 지닌 문인이라기보다 스스로를 학자로 간주한 사람이었다고 보는 것이 적절하다. 따라서 그의 시를 학자의 시로 보고 접근할 필요가 있다.

Okcheon Jo Deok-rin was one of the scholars from the Yeongnam region who suffered political hardship under the ruling Noron faction during the late Joseon period. IThis is evident not only from his life but also from the relatively small number of works he left behind. It is therefore more appropriate to regard him as a representative figure among Yeongnam scholars who endured hardship under the political dominance of the Noron faction during that time. This evaluation is undeniable when we examine the surviving records and his collected writings. However, that does not justify disregarding the literary value of his works. His poetry, amounting to a mere 244 poems, tends to be rational rather than sentimental, with emotions concealed beneath the surface. Yet, his poems sincerely and transparently reveal the emotions he experienced. Though they may appear dry or plain, his feelings are deeply embedded within them. The intellectual and restrained, image-centered expression techniques he pursued render his poetry rather flat in tone. However, by suppressing sound and excluding dynamic expressions, his poetry avoids flamboyance and instead resonates more deeply. In reading Jo Deok-rin's poetry, one can see that his poems are aligned with the trajectory of his life. They aim to convey the truth of his existence more than to achieve literary success. Perhaps for this reason, the emotions expressed in his poetry are not dramatic or extreme. Yet, the absence of sharp emotional fluctuations or intense waves in his poems results in a deeper and more lasting resonance. His poems reflect a path consistent with his life—they aim less for literary achievement and more for conveying the truth of his lived experience. While it is clear that his poetry attained a certain level of accomplishment, it is more appropriate to view his work as that of a cultivated scholar than of a literary writer. He regarded himself as a scholar rather than a writer with a sense of authorship. Therefore, it is necessary to approach his poetry as the work of a scholar.
