Journal of Sinological Studies(JSS) Vol.2 No.11.jpg

This paper examines the “Sinicization of religious liturgical music,” systematically tracing its evolution and distinctive features in Beijing through three dimensions: historical progression, artistic characteristics, and cultural connotations. Findings reveal that while preserving core doctrines, Beijing's religious liturgical music deeply integrates elements of China's outstanding traditional culture in musical forms, instrumentation, and aesthetic values, forming a uniquely “Sinicized” mode of expression. Using examples such as the Beijing-style music of Zhihua Temple and the Sinicized sacred music of Catholicism, the article analyzes how religious liturgical music embodies Chinese aesthetic spirit and value concepts.
