The impact of multimodal AI-based lesson design on English teacher efficacy and efficiency

This study explores the impact of multimodal Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher efficacy and efficiency perceptions and identifies preferred tools for lesson design. Grounded in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI in education, the research investigates how AI training influences EFL teachers' beliefs in their ability to effectively integrate AI into instruction and their views on the potential of AI to streamline and enhance language learning. This was conducted using a pretest-posttest design with 126 college students and graduate students in the Department of English. Through pre- and post-AI workshop surveys, teacher efficacy (pre: M = 2.76, post: M = 3.67, t = -5.03, p < .001) and efficiency perceptions (pre: M = 3.80, post: M = 4.43, t = -5.05, p < .001) both significantly improved. Furthermore, regression analysis identified that 57% (R² = .57) of variance in efficiency can be explained by teacher self-efficacy and a strong positive correlation between efficacy beliefs and efficiency expectations (β = .76, p < .001). Results revealed that music generation AI was identified as the most useful tool (81%). Therefore, this study highlights the potential of generative AI, particularly music generation AI, and emphasizes the importance of training for promoting positive teacher perceptions and the innovative application of this cutting-edge technology. Future studies should explore effective strategies to maximize the benefits of AI in education.
