Analysis of Practicum Guidance Status and Educational Needs of Clinical Field Instructors in Nursing Management Practicum

Purpose : Clinical field instructors directly influence the quality of clinical practicum through their interactions with nursing students. Therefore, field instructors must accurately understand the educational goals of nursing management in clinical practice and possess the ability to provide appropriate guidance for nursing students to achieve these goals. This study aimed to identify the current status of nursing management clinical practice and the educational requirements of clinical instructors for guidance. Methods : This study investigated the current status of clinical practice guidance in nursing management courses and whether field instructors provided the necessary educational materials for clinical practice guidance. As the study was conducted in a realistic context, a mixed-methods research was applied to present various perspectives. Results : Fifty-four (58.7%) field instructors reported feeling burdened by their guiding role during nursing management clinical practice, and 52 (56.5%) indicated that they used guidelines to some extent during clinical practice guidance. Additionally, 59 (64.1%) field instructors believed that the guidelines included the necessary information. The areas with the highest educational needs among the field instructors were financial management, nursing service marketing, and planning. The differences between nursing management clinical practice guidance and other types of clinical practice guidance were reported as “different practice content,” “high burden of practice,” and “leadership education.” Conclusion : To reduce the burden on nursing management clinical practice field instructors and ensure efficient clinical practice, a tailored nursing management clinical practice handbook must be developed and customized educational programs that enhance the capabilities of field instructors must be implemented.
