라캉으로 바라본 <미키 17>의 분열된 주체

The divided subject of “Mickey 17” through Lacan

봉준호 감독의 <미키 17>은 대개 인간에 대한 규정과 그 지향점이 어떠해야 하는가에 대해 질문을 던지는 작품으로 해석된다. 본고는 <미키 17>을 ‘타자’에 대한 이론을 통해 새롭게 분석함으로써 인간의 존재론적 결핍, 그리고 불안의 구조를 들여다 보고자 한다. 이 작품은 인간의 주체성이 타자와의 관계 속에서 형성된다는 점, 그리고 타자의 욕망을 욕망하는 결핍된 주체의 문제를 담고 있다는 점에서 라캉을 떠올리게 한다. 복제인간 미키는 ‘익스펜더블(소모품)’로서 반복적으로 죽음을 경험하고 복제되는 과정을 통해 직접적으로 동일성과 주체성의 문제를 드러내는데, 필자는 이를 라캉의 ‘거울 단계’, ‘상징계와 대타자’, ‘실재계’, 그리고 ‘타자의 욕망을 욕망하는 주체’ 개념을 통해 차례대로 분석한다. 이러한 분석은 파편화된 신체, 환상으로 구성된 주체로서 살아가는 인간이 끊임없는 분열 속에서 어떻게 결핍이 생겨나는지, 그리고 그것을 가능하게 하는 구조는 무엇인지를 알게 해 준다. 분열된 상태와 결핍을 받아들임으로써만 인간은 새로운 의미를 창조할 수 있다는 라캉의 견해를 영화의 주제와 결부시킴으로써 얻어지는 결론은 작품이 갖는 한계를 드러내 준다. 이러한 시도는 SF 작품을 분석함에 있어 윤리적 관점부터 내세우는 기존의 관습화되고 정형화된 의미 찾기와는 다른 의미를 갖는다.

Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 is generally interpreted as a work that raises questions about how humanity should be defined and what direction it ought to pursue. This paper seeks to offer a new reading of Mickey 17 through the lens of theories of the “Other,” in order to examine the ontological lack and the structure of anxiety that underlie human existence. The film recalls Lacan in that it illustrates how human subjectivity is constituted through relationships with the Other, and how the subject, lacking in itself, desires the desire of the Other. The clone Mickey, as an “expendable,” repeatedly experiences death and replication, thereby explicitly exposing the issues of identity and subjectivity. I analyze this process in sequence through Lacan’s concepts of the “mirror stage,” “the symbolic order and the big Other,” “the real,” and “the subject who desires the desire of the Other.” Such an analysis reveals how human beings—living as fragmented bodies and subjects constituted by fantasy—come to experience perpetual division and lack, and what kind of structure makes this possible. By linking the Lacanian notion that only by accepting one’s divided state and lack can new meaning be created to the film’s central theme, this study also exposes the limitations inherent in Mickey 17. This approach carries a distinct significance in that it departs from conventional, formulaic readings of science fiction that privilege ethical perspectives as the primary mode of interpretation.
