코로나19 시기의 미국 지상파 TV 의학 드라마의 현시대성 반영에 대한 고찰 : 장르와 방송편성유형, 제작 총괄자 체제를 중심으로

A Study on Contemporary Reflection of TV Drama Series by Five US Broadcast Network Television Medical Shows during the Covid-19 Era: Focusing on Genre, Broadcast Scheduling, Showrunner System

2020년과 2021년 코로나19 상황을 실시간으로 반영한 미국 지상파 의학 드라마 다섯 편(<시카고 메드>, <굿 닥터>, <그레이 아나토미>, <뉴 암스테르담>, <더 레지던트>)을 통해 TV 드라마 시리즈처럼 장기간 진행된 작품에서 현실을 실시간으로 반영하는 현상은 방송이라는 제공형태의 속성에서도 기인했음을 살펴본다. TV 드라마 시리즈가 시청자와 함께 살아간다는 표현은 동시대성을 의미할 것이며, 이는 시청자가 TV 드라마 시리즈에 느끼는 사실성과 연관된다. 당시의 실시간 시대 반영이 가능했던 이유로 다음 세 가지를 제시한다. 의학 드라마는 실시간으로 관련 세부사항을 도입하는 고증이 중요한 장르라는 점, 미국 지상파는 송출 및 연재 방식에서 주간단위 편성과 시즌 제도를 운영하고 있기에 극중 전개와 시청자가 비슷한 시간을 체험할 수 있는 관습이 견고했다는 점, 그리고 내용 전개 및 작품성을 책임지는 실무 총괄자의 존재가 실시간 반영을 일종의 책임 의식으로 인식하고 실행했다는 것을 들 수 있다. TV 드라마 시리즈가 시청자와 같은 시대를 살아가는 존재로서 제작 상의 어려움에도 불구하고 실시간 내용 반영을 했다는 사실은 TV 프로그램이 단순한 오락과 도피 이상이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. TV 방송의 사실감과 일상성은 프로그램이 반복적 지속적으로 제공되면서 형성되고 시청자와의 유대감을 강화한다. 이는 전통적 매체 시대의 TV가 뉴미디어 시대의 독자적 특성이 될 수 있음을 시사한다.

This study examines how five US broadcast medical dramas(Chicago Med, The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, New Amsterdam, and The Resident) reflected the COVID-19 situation in real time during 2020 and 2021. It also does the phenomenon which the long-running series like TV drama deliver the real world event on their show in real time, is rooted from the inherent attribution of broadcasting as a medium. The saying that TV drama series live with viewers implies contemporaneity, which relates to the sense of realism viewers feel toward TV shows. Three reasons are presented for how the real-time reflections of the era was possible at that time: Medical dramas are a TV genre which meticulous research to incorporate relevant details in real time is crucial. US broadcast networks operate on a weekly scheduling and season system, establishing a long time convention which viewers can experience almost similar timeframe with the storyline. And an executive producer so called showrunner could make decision the real-time reflection on storyline with sort of responsibility as professional. It’s hard for TV show industry to reflect real time event against production odds even though TV shows live on same life circle with viewers, but it shows TV programming can be more than mere entertainment and escape. The sense of reality and everydayness in television viewing is constructed through repetitive and continuous delivery of programming, make intensive bonds with viewers. This suggests that TV, the legacy medium, can catch a unique characteristic in the new media age.
