Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the lighting environment and propose the improvements by conducting a field survey to measure illuminance, luminance, and flicker after sunset in the lobby of a univer sity building used as a learning space, and to observe the lighting conditions. Methods : After a preliminary survey, a field survey was conducted from March 7 to 11, 2025, targeting four lobby spaces of C University located in Cheongju City. Results: The results showed that the illuminance levels measured on the work surfaces in the four lobby spaces of the university were as follows: Lobby A's average value exceeded the maximum standard (1,500 lx) of the KS illuminance range; Lobby B's average value met the minimum standard (600 lx); while Lobbies C and D showed that most work surfaces had illuminance levels below the minimum standard (600 lx). The luminance ratio showed that the luminance values of the wall-mounted desks in Lobbies A and B were too high, while those in Lobbies C and D were too low. The primary causes of these issues were identifi ed as lighting brightness that was either too strong or too weak for the space, and lighting positions that did not align with the work surfaces. Implications : Therefore, when designing the lighting environment for lobby spaces in university buildings that will be used as learning spaces in the future, it is necessary to check the power consumption (W) when replacing with LED lighting to ensure that the appropriate illuminance level is achieved, and to install lighting fixtures with dimming functions or additional dimming devices to enable adjustment. Additionally, the placement of lighting fixtures and the position of work surfaces must be accurately planned in advance to ensure uniform distribution and appropriate illuminance levels. To prevent glare, globe- shaped fixtures or small downlights that diffuse light evenly should be avoided. Instead, a architectural light-ceiling, where lighting fixtures cover the entire ceiling, should be applied to reduce glare and ensure uniform illuminance. Furthermore, since flicker can have health effects on users and there is little difference in lamp prices, all lighting lamps should be selected as flicker- free products.
