A Study on the Development of Evening Dress Designs Inspired by Fireworks

Background, Objectives: Fireworks combine explosive chemistry, vivid colors, and dynamic light, to offer powerful visual and emotional impact. In Korea, large-scale fireworks festivals have become prominent cultural events inspiring artistic reinterpretations. The unique visual qualities of fireworks―color harmony, light diffusion, and instantaneous dynamism―share affinities with couture eveningwear, as seen in notable runway collections. However, scholarly work on fireworks as a direct fashion motif remains rare. This study explores the visual and formative characteristics of fireworks to translate them into eveningwear designs via digital fashion tools. Methods: Research methods include mind mapping as a design ideation tool in fashion, combining theoretical research on fireworks and evening wear. Extracted keywords guide the creation of a couture collection inspired by both themes. A case study illustrates the design development process and concludes with expert-led garment selection. The final designs are produced using the CLO software and presented as virtual garments. Results: Layered frills conveyed volumetric bursts; digital prints reproduced intricate patterns and vibrant colors, and contrasts in texture and hue expressed fireworks’ instantaneous brilliance. The resulting designs visualized fireworks’ aesthetics in a refined couture style. Conclusion/Implications: This study presents a replicable approach to applying cultural motifs to fashion design, offering value for both practice and education. Although CLO 3D effectively simulated form and texture, physical prototyping is needed for 3D embellishments. The fireworks theme exhibits potential for broader applications, integrating advanced materials and digital fashion technologies for innovative design.
