This study explores the application of critical literacy in educational contexts through a comparative analysis of gender ideologies in the Disney animated film Mulan and its modern retelling in the novel Mulan. While the original animation reinforces patriarchal norms and traditional gender roles, the novel challenges these narratives by presenting empowered female characters and emphasizing solidarity over competition. Grounded in the principles of critical literacy, this study examines how learners can critically engage with texts, uncover underlying ideologies, and reflect on social inequalities.
