This study develops metaverse-based English literature learning content by deriving theory-grounded design principles and evaluating their educational effectiveness through formative evaluation. Four principles were established: spatialization of narrative, sensory embodiment of psychology, visualization of symbolism, and integration of narrative with gameplay. These principles were applied to create Minecraft-based environments for Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart and Katherine Mansfield’s The Garden Party. Formative evaluation with five English literature majors revealed enhanced immersion, psychological engagement, and symbolic interpretation. Post-reading metaverse experiences deepened comprehension while pre-reading experiences stimulated interest and motivation. As an exploratory study, this research offers initial guidelines for metaverse-based literature education and suggests directions for further empirical validation.
