This study explores the comparative analysis of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and Japanese film adaptation, Yoshida Yoshishige’s Arashi ga Oka, highlighting how universal experiences of love, oppression, and loss are reshaped through distinct cultural frameworks. Drawing on Johan Galtung’s theory of structural violence, Henri Lefebvre’s concept of the production of space, and the Japanese aesthetic principle of Ma, this analysis shows how Brontë’s Gothic excess is reconfigured into Yoshida’s cinematic restraint, where silence, spatial emptiness, and visual minimalism articulate suppressed emotions. While Wuthering Heights symbolizes the moors as passion and exclusion, reinforcing Heathcliff’s marginalization within a rigid class order, Arashi ga Oka situates Onimaru and Kinu within feudal domestic and religious spaces, where temples and houses embody systems of gendered oppression and ritual obligation.
