Based on the author’s pedagogical experiments in multiple education programs, this article introduces Language Justice and Language Welfare as a paradigm for English education in the Age of AI. Language Welfare provides a foundation for our society to become more stable and harmonious. Literacy education, namely the education to foster students’ competency to read the world and communicate across language barriers, is supported by the culture of language welfare and, in turn, enables the societal culture of language welfare. For this literacy education, English has a clear advantage over Korean, because students can more readily accept that it is hard to speak and understand English. English-based literacy education has special strength in cultivating students’ key competency in understanding, assessing, and addressing unfamiliar situations and non-codified tasks. In that regard, English education plays a vital role in national competency in the age of AI and a fast-changing world.
