익산 미륵사지 금사 자수품(刺繡品)의 문양과 상징 의미

The patterns and symbolic meaning of the gold embroidery of Mireuksaji Temple in Iksan

본 고는 639년으로 편년되는 미륵사지 금사 자수품과 조형적 특성이 유사한 당대 법문사, 아스카시 대 호류지[法隆寺] 전래 자수품, 천수국수장과 같은 고대 자수품과 후대에 출현하는 라직물 바탕의 자 수불상[繡佛] 사례를 통해, 미륵사지 금사 자수품의 도상을 구성하는 문양 표현과 문양에 내재되어 있 는 종교적 상징 의미를 밝히고자 하였다. 미륵사지 금사 자수품은 자수의 바탕직물로 문라(紋羅)를 사 용하고, 붉은 채색사로 수를 놓았다. 자수의 가장자리에는 순금(純金)으로 된 금박 편(金箔 片)을 나선 형으로 말아 감은 연금사(撚金絲)를 사용하였으며, 자수의 문양은 초화문으로 되어있다. 현전하는 국 내외 불교 자수품의 사례와 비교해본 결과 미륵사지 금사 자수품은 동아시아의 대표적인 자수불상과 자수품은 아미타신앙의 발전과 대체로 일치하고 있었으며, 주요 재료 및 기법면에서도 시대와 지역을 막론한 유사성이 발견된다. 이에 미륵사지 금사 자수품의 초화문의 문양을 극락정토의 구성요소를 표 현한 것으로 추정할 수 있다.

This study aimed to elucidate the religious symbolic meanings inherent in the patterns that compose the iconography of the gold thread embroidery of Mireuksaji Temple, through examples of ancient embroidery pieces with similar formal characteristics to the gold thread embroidery of Mireuksaji Temple dating to 639, embroidery pieces from the Famensi temple in Tang Dynasty and Horyuji Temple from the Asuka period, and embroidery statues of Buddha that appeared later. The Mireuksaji gold embroidery uses 4-end complex gauze as the base fabric for the embroidery, and is embroidered with red colored thread. The edges of the embroidery use spiral-wrapped gold strip made of pure gold, and the embroidery pattern is a flower pattern. As a result, the representative embroidered Buddhist statues and embroidered products of East Asia that are extant are largely consistent with the development of the Amitabha faith, and similarities are found across eras and regions in terms of major materials and techniques. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the flower pattern of the gold- embroidered products of Mireuksaji Temple expresses the components of the Pure Land.
