Analysis on the appropriateness of basic vocabulary list in 2022 revised English curriculum: Focused on loanwords and school/subject-level sublists

The present study aims to examine the appropriateness of the basic vocabulary list in 2022 revised English curriculum, with particular attention to its regulations on loanwords and the sublists for each school and/or subject level. The new curriculum has been implemented in primary and secondary schools since its publication in 2022. However, some scholars have already identified notable weaknesses, not only in the selection of words in the basic vocabulary list but also in the related regulations. This corpus-based study analyzes how the loanwords and the structure of each sublist have been reshaped in comparison with the 2015 revised English curriculum. The findings indicate that many familiar words were excluded from the primary sublist, while a number of words moved from the secondary level. The analysis also reveals that the secondary sublist contains a number of low-frequency words which may lead to noncompliance with the recommended rules for secondary textbooks. Furthermore, this study discusses the loanword policy within the regulation and how changes in the new curriculum have reduced the practical effectiveness of the basic vocabulary list. The results are expected to provide insights for developing a more effective vocabulary list in the future.
