다중언어 한국어 학습자의 일상 담화에 나타난 코드스위칭을 통한 정체성 수행

Identity Performance through Code-Switching in the Everyday Discourse of Multilingual Korean Language Learners

본 연구는 다중언어 한국어 학습자의 일상 담화에 나타나는 언어 선택과 코드스위칭을 통해 드러나는 정체성 수행과 사회적 자기 포지셔닝 양상을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 연구자와 두 명의 고급 한국어 학습자가 참여한 총 62분 19초 분량의 자연 담화를 녹음·전사하여 분석 자료로 사용하였다. 본 연구는 Gumperz(1982)의 코드스위칭 담화 기능, Myers-Scotton(1993, 1998)의 유표성 모델, 그리고 Bucholtz & Hall(2005)의 정체성 이론을 토대로 상호작용사회언어학적 담화분석(interactional sociolinguistic discourse analysis)을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 참여자들은 코드스위칭을 통하여 ‘한국에서 활동하는 연구자’, ‘한국에서 생활하는 외국인’, ‘떠오르는 다중언어 화자’로서의 정체성을 구성하고 수행하였다. 특히 학문적 담화에서의 한국어 사용은 ‘전문가’로서의 정체성을, 중국어 및 한국어 담화표지의 교차 사용은 ‘한국 거주 중인 외국인’로서의 복합적 정체성을 드러냈으며, 한국어, 중국어와 영어의 혼합 사용은 ‘다중언어 화자’로서의 정체성을 수행하는 양상으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 코드스위칭이 단순한 언어적 편의의 수단이 아니라 사회문화적 의미를 지닌 정체성 수행의 전략적 자원임을 보여준다. 또한 본 연구는 고급 한국어 학습자와 한국 내 외국인의 언어 사용 및 정체성 수행 양상을 이해하는 데 기초 자료로서의 의의를 지닌다.

This study explores how multilingual Korean language learners perform identity and negotiate social positioning through language choice and code-switching in their everyday discourse. The data consist of 62 minutes and 19 seconds of natural conversation recorded between the researcher and two advanced Korean learners. The data was analyzed with an interactional sociolinguistic discourse approach, drawing on Gumperz’s (1982) discourse functions of code-switching, Myers-Scotton’s (1993, 1998) Markedness Model, and Bucholtz and Hall’s (2005) identity framework. The findings reveal that the participants construct and perform multiple identities through code-switching: as “researchers active in Korea,” “foreign residents living in Korea,” and “emerging multilingual speakers.” Specifically, the use of Korean in academic discourse indexes a professional identity, while the alternation between Chinese and Korean discourse markers reflects a hybrid identity as foreigners in Korea. Furthermore, the blended use of Korean, Chinese, and English signifies an emerging multilingual identity. These results demonstrate that code-switching is not merely a tool of communicative convenience but a strategic resource that conveys sociocultural meaning in identity performance. The study provides foundational insights into the linguistic practices and identity constructions of advanced Korean learners and foreign residents in the Korean society. (Seoul National University)
