The purpose of this study is to explore how films can be transformed from a tool of language input into an active medium for learners’ expressive output through emotion-based stage directions. The teaching material was KPop Demon Hunters (Kang & Appelhans, 2025), an American animation released in 2025. The participants were eight university English majors with intermediate-high proficiency, indicated by TOEIC scores in the 800s. A case study was conducted for eight weeks, during which participants created stage directions for selected film scenes in each session. Their stage directions were peer-reviewed across two domains: the narrative domain (creativity and engagement) and the language domain (quantity of language produced and satisfaction with AI-assisted translation). The findings revealed that participants highly valued stage directions grounded in emotion and personal experience within the narrative domain, while imaginative storytelling enhanced engagement. In terms of language production, two approaches emerged: longer expressions to aid comprehension and shorter ones to enhance engagement. Satisfaction with AI support averaged 92 out of 100, showing that learners viewed AI as emotionally reassuring and practically helpful. Overall, the combined use of film and AI encouraged creativity and expressive agency in EFL learners, bridging the gap between L1 child and L2 adult learning.
