A preliminary study of developing a school-based in-service English teacher training for supporting continuing professional development

In today’s rapidly evolving society shaped by rapid technological advancements, the necessity for teachers’ ongoing professional development has become more critical than ever. In the field of language teacher education, sustained efforts have been made to support teachers’ continuous learning so that they can remain current with evolving pedagogical approaches, effectively integrate innovative digital technologies, and respond to the increasingly diverse academic, linguistic, and socio-emotional needs of students. Against this backdrop, this study proposes a school-based in-service English teacher training model designed to foster teachers’ continuing professional development within their authentic teaching contexts. The guiding principles of the model are derived from an extensive review of literature on language teacher education, as well as insights gained from an analysis of existing intensive in-service programs and exemplary school-based professional development initiatives. Central to the proposed model is a strong linkage between professional training and teachers’ everyday classroom practices, with particular emphasis on action research, teacher agency in professional learning, collaborative inquiry, and systematic reflective teaching. Finally, the study offers practical suggestions to enhance the effectiveness of teacher training programs and concludes with concrete recommendations for implementing the proposed school-based in-service English teacher training model in real educational settings and broader contexts.
