모옌 장편소설의 인물과 공간에 나타나는 폭력과 트라우마 연구 - 『붉은 수수 가족』과 『개구리』를 중심으로

A Study on Violence and Trauma in the Characters and Spaces of Mo Yan’s Novels: Focusing on Red Sorghum Family and Frog

본 연구는 모옌의 장편소설 『붉은 수수 가족』과 『개구리』를 연구 대상으로 하여 인물과 공간에 나타나는 폭력 서사와 트라우마 양상을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를위해 먼저 『붉은 수수 가족』 속 인물들이 경험하는 전쟁 폭력 그리고 가부장제 폭력과 『개구리』속의 국가 제도적 폭력과 여성에 대한 폭력을 살펴보고, 그 과정에서 형성되는 트라우마의 양상을 고찰하였다. 또한 『붉은 수수 가족』에서 공간적 배경인 가오미 둥베이향이 어떻게 유토피아적 이상향에서 폭력과 희생의 공간으로 변화하는지를 규명하였다. 아울러 『개구리』에서는 가오미 둥베이향이 폭력과 생명력이 공존하는 공간으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과 두 작품은 폭력의 주체와 양상에서 뚜렷한 차이를 보이지만, 공통적으로 폭력의 기억을 회고하고 재구성하는 과정을 통해 집단적 트라우마를 치유하고 인간의 존엄성을 드러내고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 모옌 문학의 폭력 서사와 트라우마 양상을 심화하는 동시에 중국 당대 문학에 나타나는 폭력과 트라우마의 기억을 이해하는 데 기여하며, 더 나아가 폭력의 서사가 사회적 기억과 문화적 정체성 형성에 어떤 의미를 갖는지 탐구하는 데 중요한 단초 를 제공한다.

This study examines Mo Yan’s novels Red Sorghum Family and Frog with the aim of analyzing how narratives of violence and manifestations of trauma appear in both characters and spatial settings. In Red Sorghum Family, the focus is on wartime and patriarchal violence, while in Frog the emphasis is on state institutional violence and violence against women. The study explores how these experiences shape trauma within the narrative. It also investigates the transformation of Gaomi Northeast Township: in Red Sorghum Family it shifts from an imagined utopian homeland into a space of violence and sacrifice, while in Frog it is depicted as a place where violence and vitality coexist. The findings show that although the two works differ in the agents and forms of violence, both employ a shared strategy of recalling and reconstructing violent memories. Through this process, they confront collective trauma and reaffirm human dignity. Ultimately, the study deepens understanding of violence and trauma in Mo Yan’s literature, contributes to the study of how contemporary Chinese literature engages with the memory of violence, and provides a basis for exploring the role of violence narratives in shaping social memory and cultural identity.
