Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the subfactors of internalized shame(inadequacy, emptiness, self-punishment, and mistake anxiety) and social interaction anxiety in college students, as well as to investigate the moderating effect of men-talization on this relationship. Methods: A total of college students(N=325) completed a self-report questionnaire assessing feelings of internalized shame, social interaction anxiety, and mentalization. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27 and the Process Macro Version 4.3(Hayes, 2022). Results: The results of this study are as follows. First, the subfactors of internalized shame were positively related with social interaction anxiety. Second, mentalization moderated the effects of feelings of inadequacy, self-punishment, and mistake anxiety on social interaction anxiety. Mentalization did not morderated the effect of emptiness on social interaction anxiety. Conclusions: By examining subscale-level relationships between internalized shame and social interaction anxi-ety, this study contributes to the understanding of interpersonal difficulties among college students and highlights mentalization as a potential protective factor.
