The Effect of Affectionate Parenting on Preschoolers’ Internalization of Conduct : The Moderated Mediation Effect of Cognitive Effortful Control by Emotion Regulation of Preschoolers

Objective: This study examines the influence of cognitive effortful control and emotion regu-lation on the relationship between affectionate parenting and internalization of conduct, spe-cifically investigating the mediating effect of cognitive effortful control and the moderating ef-fect of emotion regulation. Methods: This study included 205 parents of children aged 4 to 5 years. Data were analyzed for the moderated mediating effect between variables using SPSS Process Macro methods. Results: First, preschoolers’ cognitive effortful control mediated the relationship between affectionate parenting and preschoolers’ internalization of conduct. Second, the results indicated that preschoolers’ emotion regulation moderated the relationship between affectionate parenting and cognitive effortful control, such that the effect of affectionate pa-renting was stronger in the low emotion regulation group. Third, the mediating effect of cogni-tive effortful control was moderated by emotion regulation in the relation between affectionate parenting and internalization of conduct. Conclusions: These results emphasize the need for parent education and early childhood programs to integrate emotional and cognitive regulatory components.
