This study examines how place-making is constructed in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea, and explores its implications for contemporary cultural tourism and English literature education. In The Sun Also Rises, the collective excitement and ritualistic experience of the Pamplona bullfighting festival drive the narrative, while in The Old Man and the Sea, the solitary struggle and communion with nature set against the Cuban sea of Cojímar shape the story. By analyzing the depiction of places and the gaze of characters in both works, this study reveals how literary place-making concretizes the reader’s imagined travel experience and connects it to the creation of real-world tourism products. The Pamplona festival has evolved into a “participatory experience” form of tourism, whereas Santiago’s voyage in Cojímar has developed into a “reflective observation” tourism model, each fostering distinct modes of cultural consumption. These findings suggest that cultural education in English literature can be expanded through the mediation of travel narratives and place-based experiences. By analyzing the process through which Hemingway’s travel narratives are continually reproduced at the intersection of literature, tourism, and education, this study highlights the potential for linking place-making with cultural pedagogy.
