사회학에서 연구자 경험 서술의 인식론적 의미: 일본 대화적 구성주의를 중심으로

Researchers’ Experiential Narratives in Sociology: Dialogical Constructionism in Japan

본 연구는 일본 생애이야기 연구, 특히 사쿠라이 아쓰시의 대화적 구성주의를 중심으로 질적 연구에서 연구자의 경험 서술이 갖는 인식론적 의미를 검토한다. 대화적 구성주의는 인터뷰를 단순 자료수집이 아닌, 연구자와 참여자가 상호작용하며 의미를 공동 구성하는 사회적 실천으로 본다. 연구자는 참여자의 경험을 분석하는 동시에 자신의 위치성과 경험을 성찰적으로 드러내며, 이를 분석의 정당한 요소로 제시한다. 그러나 이러한 접근은 서사의 사실성 유보 및 구성주의적 정합성 문제 등에서 비판을 받는다. 이에 본 연구는 ‘서사’, ‘대화’, ‘구성’ 개념을 통해 대화적 구성주의의 인식론적 특징을 규명하였다. ‘서사’는 사회적 맥락의 다층성을, ‘대화’는 화자의 이해와 청자의 관점 조정을, ‘구성=생성’은 아직 사회문제로 인식되지 않은 경험과 시대적 변화 속 서사 생성을 포착한다. 이를 통해 대화적 구성주의 연구는 참여자 경험의 심층 이해와 연구자의 반성적 성찰이 가능함을 보여주며, 한국 사회학의 질적 연구에서 연구자 경험을 이론적으로 위치시키는 인식론적 틀을 제시한다.

This study examines the epistemological significance of researchers’ self-reflexive accounts in qualitative research, focusing on Japanese life story studies, particularly Atsushi Sakurai’s dialogical constructivism. Dialogical constructivism views interviews not merely as a means of data collection but as a social practice in which researchers and participants co-construct meaning through interaction. Researchers analyze participants’ experiences while reflexively revealing their own positionality and experiences, presenting these as legitimate elements of analysis. However, this approach has faced criticism regarding the suspension of narrative factuality and issues of constructivist coherence. This study clarifies the epistemological characteristics of dialogical constructivism through the concepts of ‘narrative,’ ‘dialogue,’ and ‘construction.’ ‘Narrative’ highlights the multilayered social contexts of stories, ‘dialogue’ facilitates deeper understanding of the participant and adjustment of the researcher’s perspective, and ‘construction=generation’ captures experiences not yet recognized as social issues and the creation of narratives amid societal changes. Overall, dialogical constructivist research enables in-depth understanding of participants’ experiences and researcher reflexivity, offering an epistemological framework for situating researcher experience in Korean qualitative sociology.
