경력교사 의원면직의 의미:교직을 이탈한 한 40대 교사의 자문화기술지적 고백과 성찰

Veteran Teacher’s Resignation: An Autoethnographic Confession and Reflection of a Teacher in His 40s

이 연구는 경력교사에 의한 의원면직 행위의 본질적 의미가 무엇인지를 탐색하기 위해 실시되었다. 이를 위해 16년 경력을 뒤로 한 채 의원면직한, 나의 초등학교 교사로서의 기존 경험과 퇴직 이후의 삶을 자문화기술지를 통해 성찰해 보았다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 경력교사로서 나의 의원면직 행위 결정 과정은 ‘나이듦에 대해 두려워하고 승진 선택을 강요받는 교사로서의 삶’, ‘타 전공에로 규합됨을 선택했지만, 여전히 남은 자기 전공에 대한 부채감을 가진 연구자로서의 삶’, ‘직업적 자유 기대와 가장으로서의 무게가 충돌하는 가족구성원으로서의 삶’이라는 세 가지 내러티브로 생성되었다. 다음, 이러한 나의 경험으로부터 비롯된 경력교사의 의원면직은 경직된 교직 문화, 폐쇄적인 교직 발달 단계, 그리고 제약적인 교사 역할 범주 등으로 규정되는 기존 교직 구조로부터의 자발적 이탈이라는 행위적 의미로 드러났다. 사실상 지금도 많은 교사가 교직 특유의 구조성에 사로잡혀 교직을 우선하는 삶을 사는 가운데, 개인적 욕망과 가치를 희생시키는 삶을 살고 있다. 그러한 교사들에게 의원면직 결정은 극단적 선택을 통해서라도 자신의 진정한 자아를 찾기 위한 개인의 노력과 의지의 표현이다. 따라서 교육계가 경력교사의 교육적 가치와 중요성을 방기(放棄)한 것이 아니라면, 앞으로는 이들의 고민과 어려움을 온전히 이해하고 적합한 지원을 위한 정책적 노력을 강구할 필요성이 크다.

This study employed autoethnography to explore the essential meaning of veteran teachers’ voluntary resignation. To this end, I reflected on my sixteen-year career as an elementary school teacher and my life following the departure, focusing on my personal experiences. The findings generated three distinct narratives defining the process of my decision to resign: ‘the life as a teacher fearful of aging and pressured to choose promotion,’ ‘the life as a researcher who integrated into another field yet felt indebted to the original discipline,’ and ‘the life as a family member facing a conflict between the expectation of professional freedom and the burden of being the head of the household.’ Through these experiences, the act of veteran teachers’ resignation revealed its significance as a voluntary deviation from the existing professional structure, which is defined by a rigid teaching culture, closed career development stages, and restrictive teacher role categories. Even now, many teachers are trapped by the profession’s unique structural rigidity, prioritizing their occupation and sacrificing personal desires and values. For such teachers, the decision to resign is an expression of individual effort and will to pursue their authentic self, even if it necessitates an extreme choice. Therefore, if school education intends not to neglect the educational value of veteran teachers, future policies must strive to fully understand and wholeheartedly support these educators.
