Did the Letters of Paul and the Gospel of Thomas Share Gnostic ideas? A Criticial Investigation

이 논문의 목적은 바울(서신)과 도마(복음)이 과연 영지사상을 공유하였는가를 살피는데 있다. 지난 세기 바울과 영지주의와의 연관성은 바울연구에 있어서 중요한 논쟁거리 중 하나였다. 2세기 기독교 영지주의자였던 마르시온과 발렌티누스는 자신들을 바울의 계승자로 자처했다. 최근 페이절스(E. Pagels)와 안네스(A. Annes)의 연구는 바울서신과 영지주의의 연관성에 주목하기도 했다. 본 소고는 바울서신과 도마복음이 지닌 장르적, 신학적 차이를 먼저 살펴보고, 영지사상적 접점들을 찾아 볼 것이다. 이러한 작업을 통해 바울과 도마가 지닌 차이점과 공통점들이 당대의 정치, 사회적 환경, 그리고 다양한 종교적 지형과 무관하지 않았음을 밝힐 것이다. 그리고 도마복음이 지닌 역사적 가치와 현대적 의미를 생각해 볼 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the Pauline epistles and the Gospel of Thomas share elements of Gnostic thought. Throughout the past century, the relationship between Paul and Gnosticism has remained a central issue in Pauline studies. Second-century Christian Gnostics such as Marcion and Valentinus claimed to be successors of Paul, and recent studies by scholars like Elaine Pagels and Andrea Annes have revisited the potential connections between Pauline theology and Gnostic ideas. This article first explores the literary and theological differences between the Pauline epistles and the Gospel of Thomas, and then identifies possible points of contact with Gnostic thought. Through this analysis, it is argued that the similarities and differences between Paul and Thomas cannot be separated from the political, social, and religious contexts of their time. Finally, the study reflects on the historical significance and contemporary relevance of the Gospel of Thomas.
