오늘날 죄와 양심에 대한 일반적인 이해는 주로 개인의 내면에서 비롯되는 윤리적 자각이나 보편적 도덕률에 기반한 판단으로 간주된다. 특히 기독교 전통에서는 죄를 하나님의 율법 위반으로, 죄책감은 이에 대한 개인의 내적 반응으로 해석해 왔다. 그러나 이러한 내면 중심적 이해는 공동체 내 감정과 상호작용이 죄 인식에 미치는 영향을 상대적으로 간과해 왔다. 본 논문은 최근 성서 해석학, 인지심리학, 도덕철학의 연구성과를 바탕으로, 죄와 양심이 고립된 개인에게서 형성되는 것이 아니라 공동체의 상호작용, 감정 순환, 사회적 피드백을 통해 구성된다는 통합적 관점을 제시한다. 이를 위해 마태복음 18장 15-35절에 등장하는 죄와 용서에 관한 담론을 중심으로, 죄책감과 양심의 사회적 구성 과정을 내러티브 분석을 통해 고찰한다. 해당 본문은 책망, 용서, 회복이라는 감정적 행위들이 공동체 내 윤리 질서를 어떻게 구성하는지를 보여주며, 자비의 실천 여부가 죄의 인식 기준으로 기능함을 드러낸다. 아울러 죄책감과 양심에 관련된 학제간 연구들을 종합하여, 양심이 도덕 감정과 사회 구조가 만나는 접점에서 형성된다는 사실을 논증한다. 본 연구는 성서 본문 해석에 있어 죄와 양심의 개념을 단순한 내면적 윤리 문제로 환원하지 않고, 감정과 공동체 윤리가 맞물려 작동하는 관계적 구조로 이해할 이론적 가능성을 제시한다는 데 의의가 있다.

Sin and conscience have been understood as products of individual moral awareness or universal ethical reasoning. Especially Christian theology typically defines sin as violating God’s law and understands guilt as the emotional response that follows such recognition. However, this inward-focused view tends to ignore how moral emotions and ethical judgments emerge through interpersonal dynamics. Drawing on insights from biblical hermeneutics, cognitive psychology, and moral philosophy, this paper takes an integrative approach that situates sin and conscience within social interaction, emotional circulation, and communal feedback. Focusing on the discourse on the sin and forgiveness in Matthew 18:15-35, the study examines how narrative constructs communal ethics through acts of rebuke, forgiveness, and restoration. The text illustrates how mercy functions not only as an emotional response but also as a moral standard within the community. The analysis incorporates Charles Taylor’s theory of moral formation, theological perspectives by de Boer and Senior, and empirical findings from cognitive and neuroethical research to show how conscience arises from the interplay between emotional regulation and social context. By reinterpreting sin and conscience as relationally and emotionally shaped rather than merely internal or legal categories, this paper contributes a fresh framework for understanding biblical ethics in communal terms.
