A Historical Reflection on the Concept of Altruism: Modern Intellectual Projects Surrounding Altruism

이타주의(altruism)는 오늘날 일상 언어와 윤리 담론에서 자명한 덕목처럼 사용되고 있다. 그러나 그 개념의 기원과 역사적 함의는 충분히 성찰되어 왔다고 보기 어렵다. 본 논문은 이타주의를 초월적 도덕 가치나 보편적 인간 본성을 표현하는 개념으로 보기보다, 근대 이후의 특정한 역사적·철학적 요구 속에서 고안된 개념으로 바라보며 그 형성과 변형의 과정을 개념사적으로 검토한다. 이를 위해 먼저 칸트의 ‘이기주의’(Egoismus) 개념을 출발점으로 삼아, 오귀스트 콩트가 실증주의적 세계관과 사회 통합의 윤리 원리로서 ‘이타주의’(altruisme)를 창안한 맥락을 분석한다. 이후 이타주의 개념이 19세기 후반 서구 진화생물학 생물학과 진화론 담론을 거쳐 일본의 근대 과학 담론 속에서 재맥락화되고, 다시 20세기 초 한국 근대 지식장으로 번역·유입되는 사례를 고찰해본다. 본 논문은 이러한 개념의 이동과 번역이 이타주의의 의미를 단선적으로 확정하려하기 보다는 과학, 종교, 정치가 교차하는 담론의 장 속에서 그 의미가 지속적으로 변화되어 왔음을 보여준다. 이를 통해 오늘날 진화생물학, 사회과학, 윤리 담론에서 다시 호출되는 이타주의 개념을 비판적으로 재검토할 필요성을 제기하고, 현대 사회에서 타자성, 연대, 책임의 윤리적 언어를 성찰하기 위한 개념사적 토대를 제공하고자 한다.

Altruism is widely employed in contemporary everyday language and ethical discourse as a self-evident moral virtue. Yet the origins of this concept and its historical implications have rarely been subjected to sustained critical reflection. This article approaches altruism not as an expression of a transcendental moral value or a universal human nature, but as a concept devised in response to specific historical and philosophical demands of the modern period, and examines its formation and transformation from the perspective of conceptual history. Taking Immanuel Kant’s notion of egoism (Egoismus) as a point of departure, the article first analyzes the context in which Auguste Comte coined altruism (altruisme) as an ethical principle of social integration grounded in a positivist worldview. It then traces how the concept was recontextualized within late nineteenth-century Western evolutionary biology and subsequently appropriated in modern Japanese scientific discourse, before being translated and introduced into the Korean intellectual milieu in the early twentieth century. Through this examination, the article demonstrates that the movement and translation of the concept did not lead to a linear stabilization of its meaning, but rather to its continual transformation within a discursive field shaped by the intersections of science, religion, and politics. In doing so, this study calls for a critical reexamination of the renewed deployment of altruism in contemporary debates in evolutionary biology, the social sciences, and ethics, and seeks to provide a conceptual-historical foundation for reflecting on ethical vocabularies of otherness, solidarity, and responsibility in modern society.
