인류세 지정을 둘러싼 과학적 논쟁과 개념 확장을 통해 살펴보는 인류세 시대 기독교 신학의 역할

The Role of Christian Theology in the Scientific Age : An Examination through the Debate and Crisis of the Anthropocene

본 논문은 인류세를 둘러싼 지질학적 논의, 인문·사회과학적 해석을 종합적으로 고찰함으로써, 과학의 객관성 개념과 인류세 시대의 종교의 역할을 검토한다. 먼저 인류세의 공식 지질연대 편입이 국제 층서학 위원회의 표결에서 부결되고 홀로세가 유지된 사실을 검토하면서, 인류세를 둘러싼 과학적 쟁점이 사회·정치적 맥락과 무관한 순수 객관 영역이 아니라는 점을 논증한다. 이어 인류세 개념이 생태근대주의, 생태사회주의, 포스트휴머니즘 등 다양한 이론적 입장에서 인간중심주의를 비판하고 인간–비인간–지구 시스템의 상호의존성을 사유하는 도구로 활용되는 양상을 분석한다. 이러한 논의를 배경으로, 화이트헤드의 과정철학이 세계를 관계적 생성 과정으로 파악하고 과학과 종교를 상보적 진리 탐구로 이해하며, 초월성과 내재성이 결합된 신 개념을 제시한다는 점을 고찰한다. 마지막으로 노튼의 ‘인류세 종교’ 구상을 참조하여, 신–인간–비인간의 얽힘을 사유하는 종교의 가능성을 살펴보고, 인류세 시대 기독교 신학이 인간 중심의 전능 신의 도식을 넘어 생명들의 협력과 공존을 지향하는 실천적 비전으로 재구성되어야 함을 강조한다.

This paper thoroughly reviews geological discussions and humanities/social science interpretations of the Anthropocene era, examining the concept of scientific objectivity and the role of religion in this period. First, it discusses how the official inclusion of the Anthropocene as a geological epoch was rejected by the International Commission on Stratigraphy in favor of retaining the Holocene. This shows that scientific issues surrounding the Anthropocene are not confined to an objective realm independent of social and political contexts. Next, the paper analyzes how the concept of the Anthropocene is used to critique anthropocentrism and conceptualize the interdependence of the human–nonhuman–Earth system from various theoretical perspectives, such as ecological modernism, ecosocialism, and posthumanism. Against this backdrop, the paper examines how Whitehead’s process philosophy conceives of the world as a relational process of becoming; understands science and religion as complementary truth-seeking endeavors; and proposes a concept of God that unites transcendence and immanence. Finally, drawing on Norton’s conception of a “Anthropocene religion,” the paper explores religion’s potential to contemplate the entanglement of the divine, humans, and nonhumans.
