공(空)의 하나님 - 디오니시우스의 부정신학과 원효의 공 사상 비교

The God of Emptiness: A Comparative Study of Dionysius’ Apophatic Theology and Wonhyo’s Philosophy of Emptiness

본 연구는 디오니시우스의 부정신학과 원효의 공(空) 사상을 비교한다. 디오니시우스는 하나님을 언어와 지성으로 도달할 수 없는 초월적 실재, ‘무(無)의 하나님’으로 규정하고, ‘긍정–부정–초(超)부정’의 삼중 구조를 통해 무지(無知)의 어둠 속에서 하나님과의 합일해야 함을 강조한다. 한편 원효는 일심(一心) 사상과 삼공(三空) 수행론을 통해 모든 존재의 무자성(無自性)과 절대적 평등을 강조하고, 깨달음 이후에도 자비를 실천함으로써 공을 구현할 것을 역설한다. 두 전통은 각각 기독교 신학과 불교 철학의 맥락에 속하지만, 언어와 존재를 넘어서 궁극적 실재를 탐구한다는 점에서는 유사한 구조를 지닌다. 본 연구는 람 아다르 말(Ram Adhar Mall)이 제시한 상호문화적 유비 해석학을 이론적 틀로 삼아, 디오니시우스의 부정신학 속 무의 하나님과 원효의 공 사이의 조건부 등치 가능성을 논한다. 이를 통해 완전한 일치나 완전한 차이가 아닌, 문화적 중첩 속에서 두 사상이 부분적으로 겹치는 구조를 밝히고, 상호보완적 이해의 가능성을 탐색한다.

This study undertakes a comparative examination of Dionysius’ apophatic theology and Wonhyo’s philosophy of emptiness(空) from an intercultural perspective. Dionysius conceives of God as a transcendent reality beyond the reach of human language and intellect, and through the triple structure of ‘affirmation–negation–hyper-negation’, he ultimately emphasizes union with God in the darkness of unknowing(無知). In contrast, Wonhyo, through his doctrine of One Mind(一心) and the praxis of the ‘threefold emptiness’(三空), reveals the non-self-nature(無自性) and absolute equality of all beings, while further proposing that emptiness should be actualized as compassionate practice even after enlightenment. Although rooted respectively in the contexts of Christian theology and Buddhist philosophy, both traditions share a structural analogy in that they seek ultimate reality beyond language and being. Drawing on Ram Adhar Mall’s hermeneutics of intercultural analogy as its theoretical framework, this study argues for the conditional equivalence between the God of nothingness and the emptiness. In doing so, it discloses overlapping structures within cultural interstices rather than asserting identity or incomparability, and, by preserving the difference between the personal God and the impersonal emptiness, explores the possibility of complementary understanding.
