Can Preaching Become a Local Theology? A Study on the Interrelationship Between Sermons, Context, and Theology

논문은 로버트 슈라이터(Robert J. Schreiter)의 『Constructing Local Theologies』 (지역신학들을 세우기)에서 다루고 있는 지역신학의 개념을 근거로 해서 설교와 지역신학, 상황과의 관계를 탐구한다. 지역 공동체의 문화적 상황을 강조하는 지역신학의 구성은, 설교라는 행위와 본질적으로 연결된다. 설교는 특정 지역 공동체에 속한 회중에게 선포되는 말씀이기 때문에 그 공동체의 고유성에서 분리될 수 없다. 만약 보편신학이 존재하지 않는다면, 마찬가지로 모든 기독교 공동체에 동일하게 적용되는 보편적 설교 이론이나 모델 또한 존재할 수 없다. 나아가 설교 이론, 방법론, 형식은 역사적으로 모두 상대적일 수밖에 없다는 견해에 따라 설교에 대한 새로운 질문을 제기한다. 그것은 설교라는 것이 상황과의 대화이고, 해석이기에, 설교는 신학, 상황과의 연관성 속에서 새롭게 형성되어야 한다. 오늘 사회는 다문화적이며, 다른 문화, 역사, 민족적 배경을 지닌 사람들로 구성되어 있다. 그렇기에 지역 공동체의 상황과 설교의 관계는 진지하게 다루어야 한다. 논문은 다음과 같은 구조로 진행된다. 슈라이터의 논의를 중심으로 지역신학의 개념을 살펴보고, 설교를 지역신학으로 이해할 가능성을 논의한다. 지역신학이 상황적 설교의 필요성과 어떻게 연결되는지 논증한다. 마지막으로 다원적, 다문화적 사회 속에서, 설교가 지역신학으로 어떤 과제를 갖는지 제시한다.

This paper explores the relationship between preaching, local theology, and context, drawing on the arguments for local theology presented in Robert J. Schreiter’s Constructing Local Theologies. The construction of local theology, which emphasizes the cultural context of a local community, is intrinsically linked to the act of preaching. Because preaching is a message proclaimed to a congregation within a specific local community, it cannot be separated from the uniqueness of that community. If there is no universal theology, then there can be no universal preaching theory or model applicable equally to all Christian communities. Furthermore, based on the view that preaching theory, methodology, and format are all historically relative, new questions about preaching can be raised. Since preaching is a dialogue with and interpretation of a context, preaching must be reshaped within the context of theology and context. Today’s society is multicultural, comprised of people from diverse cultures, histories, and ethnic backgrounds. Therefore, the relationship between the context of local communities and preaching is seriously to be dealt with. Focusing on Robert J. Schreiter’s discussion, I examine the concept of local theology and discuss the possibility of understanding preaching as local theology. It argues how local theology connects with the need for contextual preaching. Finally, it presents the challenges that preaching faces within a rapidly changing, pluralistic, and multicultural society, from a contextual and local theological perspective.
