‘소명 역할’을 잃어가는 시니어들을 위한 목회 돌봄

Pastoral Care for Senior Adults Navigating Vocational Loss

신앙인들에게 소명은 삶의 동기이자 목적이고, 영성 생활은 곧 소명을 이루어가는 삶이라고 할 수 있다. 모든 피조물의 근본적인 소명은 “돌봄”(care-giving)이라고 할 수 있다. 하나님은 모든 사람을 친히 불러 일을 맡기시며 각자의 사교적 영역에서, 일과 삶 속에서, 각자의 고유한 개성과 재능을 통해, 그리고 모든 환경과 상황의 변화 속에서 끊임없이 사명을 감당해 나가도록 부탁하신 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 그런데 인생후반부의 노화기를 보내는 사람들은 노화로 인한 복합적인 상실과 의식적·무의식적 죽음공포에 영향을 받으며 새로운 변화를 겪게 된다. 우리의 소명은 노화기에 큰 어려움을 겪기 쉽고, 노화 현상과 노화 문화로 인해 소명의식은 점차 약화되고 삶의 의미와 목적이 희미해지기 쉽다. 소명의 화석화는 본격적인 노화기를 겪는 사람들에게 삶의 활력과 정서적 만족감을 잃는 데서 그치지 않고, 삶과 본질적 의미와 궁극적 목적을 추구하지 못하게 만들 수 있다. 이러한 소명의 위기를 겪는 신앙인을 위한 신앙공동체의 목회 돌봄은 소명을 제대로 가르치는 일, 소명 성찰을 통해 소명을 되돌아보고 소명 갱신을 통해 소명을 되살리도록 돕고 격려하는 일이라고 할 수 있다. 그럴 때, 인생후반부를 살아가는 회중들이 삶의 모든 영역에서 뜻깊고 즐거운 소명 이루기의 여정을 펼쳐낼 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 리차드 존슨(Richard Johnson)의 영성노년학과 폴 스티븐스(Paul Stevens)의 나이듦의 신학을 바탕으로 우리 사회와 교회의 환경속에서 개인적으로 노화라는 상황을 맞이하는 시니어들의 삶의 태도에 대한 제안한다. 무엇보다도 소명을 실체적이고 고정적으로 이해하는 데 그치지 않고 관계적이고 역동적으로 이해하는 태도에 대해 다루고, 이어서 소명 성찰을 통한 소명의식에 대한 재확인, 소명 갱신을 통한 소명 이루기의 구체화를 논의하고자 한다.

For Christians, vocation represents both the driving force and ultimate purpose of life, with the spiritual journey understood as the ongoing fulfillment of that calling. The foundational vocation of all creation can be framed as “care-giving,” wherein God personally calls each individual to embody their mission through distinct talents, relationships, and the ever-changing circumstances of life. Yet, in later adulthood, individuals often encounter multifaceted losses and both conscious and unconscious fears of death, which may erode their vocational awareness and obscure the meaning and direction of life. Amid this vocational crisis, faith communities are entrusted with the pastoral care of nurturing a deeper understanding of vocation, guiding reflective engagement with one’s calling, and fostering its renewal. Such care empowers older adults to pursue a vibrant and purposeful vocational journey across all dimensions of life. Grounded in Richard Johnson’s spiritual gerontology and Paul Stevens’ theology of aging, this study offers a framework for seniors navigating the realities of aging within the context of contemporary society and the church. It advocates for a relational and dynamic view of vocation, and explores how vocational awareness can be reaffirmed through life review and revitalized through the renewal of one’s calling.
