해외 중국어 사전 편찬의 문제점과 개선 방안 - 『馬來西亞華語特有詞語詞典』을 사례로

Problems and Prospects in the Compilation of Overseas Chinese Dictionaries: A Case Study of the Dictionary of Malaysian Chinese (Huayu)

본 연구는 『馬來西亞華語特有詞語詞典』(2022)을 사례로 해외 중국어 표준어 사전 편찬의 문제점을 검토하고 그 개선 방안을 모색하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이 사전은 말레이시아 최초의 현지 중국어 표준어 사전으로 소개되었으며 총 2,182개의 표제어를 수록하였다. 각 표제어에는 한어병음을 통한 발음 표기는 물론 품사, 뜻풀이와 예문도 제시되며, 방언이나 타 지역에서 유래한 어휘에는 어원을 병기하고, 현지 문화적 특색을 지닌 어휘에는 보충 설명을 덧붙였다. 그러나 각 표제어를 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 문제가 확인되었다. 첫째, 실제 발음을 반영하지 못하고 방언 또는 말레이어에서 유래한 어휘를 일률적으로 표준어 발음으로 표기하였다. 둘째, 어원 표기의 기준이 일관되지 못하여 홍콩·대만·중국 대륙에서도 사용되는 어휘를 말레이시아 현지 특유 어휘로 잘못 분류하는 등 오류가 나타났다. 셋째, 뜻풀이가 정확하지 않아 이미 현지 특징을 지닌 용법이 파생됐는데도 이를 충분히 반영하지 못하였다. 이와 같은 문제를 개선하기 위하여 본 연구는 세 가지 방안을 제시한다. 첫째, 구어 연구를 강화하고 구어 말뭉치를 구축하여 문어 자료에만 의존하는 한계를 극복할 것. 둘째, 통시적 시각을 도입하여 이전 시기 중국어에서 계승된 요소를 특유 어휘로 오인하는 사례를 방지할 것. 셋째, 이러한 시각을 겸비한 현지 연구 인력을 양성하여 말레이시아 중국어 표준어 어휘 연구의 학술적 주도권을 확보함으로써 사전 편찬 과정에서의 반복적 오판을 최소화할 것.

This paper examines challenges in overseas Chinese lexicography through a case study of the Dictionary of Malaysian Chinese(Huayu) (2022), positioned as the first locally produced Mandarin dictionary in Malaysia (2,182 entries). An item-by-item analysis identifies three issues: (i) phonetic transcriptions detached from actual usage, especially where dialectal or Malay pronunciations are normalized to Standard Mandarin; (ii) inconsistent and at times erroneous etymological treatment, including the mislabeling of forms widely used in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or mainland China as uniquely Malaysian; and (iii) imprecise definitions that overlook locally developed meanings. The paper proposes three remedies: building a spoken corpus to complement written sources; adopting a diachronic perspective to distinguish inherited early-Mandarin features from genuine local innovations; and cultivating local researchers who can integrate these approaches so as to ensure local scholarly authority in Malaysian Mandarin lexicography.
