A Cognitive Metaphorical Study of Xiushen (Self-Cultivation) in the Shiji

본 연구는《사기(史記)》에 나타난 ‘수신(修身)’ 관련 일화를 분석 대상으로, 도덕적 자기 수양이 어떠한 개념적 기제를 통해 인식되고 구현되었는지 인지의미론적 관점에서 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 개념적 은유 이론을 적용하여 ‘수신’의 사례 20건을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 수신은 개인적 차원에서는 내적 성찰과 평정심을 유지하는 ‘안정 장치’로, 사회적 차원에서는 공정성과 정치적 질서를 담보하는 ‘제도적 기반’으로, 도덕적 차원에서는 ‘무형의 자산’과 ‘지속 가능한 가치’로 각각 개념화됨을 확인하였다. 특히, ‘기폭제(씨앗)’, ‘필터’, ‘그릇’, ‘평형장치’, ‘선물’ 등 구체적이고 다양한 은유 표현을 통해, 수신은 추상적 규범이 아닌 일상적 경험에 뿌리내린 구체적 사고 체계로 드러났다. 나아가 본 연구는 Heine(1994)의 개념 위계에 따라 ‘수신’의 개념화를 정리하여, [사물]과 [공간] 범주에서의 두드러진 양상을 밝혔다. 이를 통해 수신이 은유적 기제를 통해 구체화되는 과정을 실증적으로 확인하였으며, 더불어 유교 사상 속에서 수신이 제가(齊家)·치국(治國)·평천하(平天下)로 이어지는 연쇄 구조의 기반임을 재확인하였다. 이러한 분석은 수신의 개념화를 언어적·사상사적·문화적 차원에서 교차적으로 조망함으로써, 인지언어학적 고전 해석 가능성과 학문적 기여를 제시한다.

This study examines narratives related to xiushen (修身, self-cultivation) in the Shiji (史記) with the aim of exploring how moral self-cultivation was conceptualized and represented through specific cognitive mechanisms from a cognitive semantic perspective. To this end, twenty cases of xiushen were analyzed by applying the theory of conceptual metaphor. The analysis demonstrates that xiushen is conceptualized, at the personal level, as a 'stabilizing device' that sustains self-reflection and composure; at the social level, as an 'institutional foundation' that guarantees fairness and political order; and at the moral level, as an 'intangible asset' and a form of 'sustainable value.' In particular, metaphors such as 'catalyst (seed),' 'filter,' 'vessel,' 'balancing device,' and 'gift' reveal that xiushen is not an abstract norm but rather a concrete cognitive framework rooted in everyday experience. Furthermore, this study organizes the conceptualization of xiushen according to Heine’s (1994) model of conceptual hierarchy, confirming that the [object] and [space] domains are especially salient. In doing so, it empirically illustrates the processes by which xiushen is concretized through metaphorical mechanisms, while also reaffirming its role as the foundation of the Confucian sequence of qijia (齊家, regulating the family), zhiguo (治國, governing the state), and pingtianxia (平天下, bringing peace to the world). By cross-examining the conceptualization of xiushen from linguistic, intellectual-historical, and cultural perspectives, this study highlights both the potential of cognitive linguistics for classical text interpretation and its academic contribution.
