Generative Meaning and Eventualization in the “Temporal Adverb + de + NP” Construction in Modern Chinese

본 연구는 생성어휘론(Generative Lexicon) 관점에서 현대중국어 ‘시간부사+的+NP’ 구조의 사건적 의미를 형성하는 과정을 규명한다. 시간부사는 [±과거], [±지속], [±변화], [±존재] 등의 의미 자질을 정태적 NP에 부여하여 NP의 잠재적 사건성을 활성화한다. 그리고 이 과정은 유형강제(type coercion), 공동합성(co-composition), 맥락조정(contextual adjustment) 등의 기제를 통해 이루어진다. 기능유형 NP는 즉각적인 유형강제로 내재된 술어가 활성화되나, 자연유형 NP는 은유나 담화적 보정을 거친다. 또한, 시간부사와 NP의 의미 자질은 공동합성을 통해 새로운 의미를 산출하며, 담화 또는 인지적 맥락인 맥락조정을 통해 양자 간의 범주적 불일치를 보완한다. ‘的’는 시간부사와 NP의 결합을 매개하는 구조적 필요조건이나, 사건화 자체를 견인하는 주된 요인으로 보기는 어렵다. 본 연구는 ‘시간부사+的+NP’ 구조가 중국어 문법의 생산성과 창조성을 보여주는 대표적 사례임을 밝힌다.

This study analyzes the “temporal-adverb + de + NP” construction in contemporary Mandarin within the Generative Lexicon framework to explain how temporal adverbs interact with noun phrases to produce eventive interpretations. Although the construction superficially shows a categorial mismatch, it functions as a productive mechanism for meaning generation. Temporal adverbs possess semantic features such as [±past], [±durative], [±dynamic], and [±existence], which can activate latent predicate content in otherwise stative NPs. The particle de serves mainly as a structural linker, while eventivation arises from the interplay between the adverb’s temporal properties and the NP’s qualia structure. Three processes account for its interpretive flexibility: type coercion, co-composition, and contextual accommodation. Telic or agentive NPs are readily coerced into eventive readings, whereas natural-kind NPs depend more on metaphorical or context-driven inference. The findings demonstrate that the “temporal-adverb + de + NP” construction systematically transforms static entities into event-denoting expressions, highlighting the generativity of Mandarin grammar. This analysis redefines temporal adverbs as multifunctional lexical items and contributes to broader discussions on categorial mismatch, argument structure, and the grammar–discourse interface.
