수사의 차용과 분화 - 중국 남부지역 소수민족 언어를 중심으로

Borrowing and Divergence of Numeral Systems in the Minority Languages of Southern China

본 연구는 이중 수사 체계(double numeral system)를 지닌 중국 남부지역 소수민족 언어를 대상으로 수사의 차용과 분화 현상을 고찰하고 그 기제를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이중 수사 체계라는 개념을 제기한 Greenberg(1990[1978])는 두 계열의 수사를 절대형 수사와 문맥형 수사로 구분하였다. 본 연구는 Greenberg의 절대형⋅문맥형 구분, Corbett(1978)이 지적한 수사의 품사성, 그리고 Matras(2009)의 언어 접촉에 의한 차용 관련 위계 등을 기반으로 소수민족 언어에 존재하는 이중 수사 현상을 설명하고자 한다. 특히 본 연구는 ‘三百’와 같이 수사와 단위수사가 결합할 경우, 통사적으로 수식어와 피수식어의 관계에 놓이기 때문에 수사라는 품사 범주 안에서도 그 품사성에 따라 형용사성이 강한 수사와 명사성이 강한 수사로 나뉜다는 사실에 주목하였다. 이에 수사의 기능을 형용사성과 명사성이라는 연속선상에 놓고 그 기능을 분류한 후 캄타이어족(侗台语族), 먀오야오어족(苗瑶语族), 오스트로아시아어계(南亚语系)에 속하는 다섯 언어의 수사 기능을 고찰⋅분석하였다. 분석 결과, 소수민족 언어의 수사 차용과 분화는 수사 자체의 크기, 승수로 쓰일 때의 수의 크기, 복합수사 내 통사적 위치에 따른 품사성, 그리고 선형적 확장 패턴 등의 요인이 복합적으로 작용한 결과라는 사실을 도출하였다.

This study investigates minority languages of southern China that exhibit a double numeral system, with the aim of explaining the mechanisms of borrowing and split in numeral inventories. Building on Greenberg’s (1978) distinction between absolute and contextual numerals, Corbett’s (1978) account of part-of-speech properties of numerals, and Matras’s (2009) borrowing hierarchy in language contact, the paper analyzes how double numeral systems arise and stabilize across languages. The analysis focus on the syntactic configuration where a numeral combines with a unit numeral (e.g., sān bǎi ‘three hundred’), which places the two elements in a modifier–head relation. This perspective motivates a functional continuum within the numeral category itself, ranging from adjectival to nominal uses. On this basis, we classify numeral functions along the adjectival–nominal axis and conduct a comparative analysis of five languages from three families: Kam–Tai (侗台), Miao–Yao (苗瑶), and Austroasiatic (南亚). The findings show that numeral borrowing and split in these languages result from the interaction of multiple factors: (i) the magnitude of the numeral itself; (ii) the size of the multiplier when numerals function as multipliers in complex forms; (iii) the syntactic position within complex numerals, which correlates with part-of-speech tendencies (adjectival vs. nominal); and (iv) linear pathways of expansion across numeral slots. Together, these factors account for the observed patterns of borrowing, functional differentiation between inherited and borrowed sets, and the stabilization of double numeral systems.
