사회적 변인이 독일인 한국어 학습자의 불평 화행에 미치는 영향

Influence of Social Variables on the Complaint Speech Acts of German Learners of Korean

본 연구는 사회적 거리와 사회적 지위가 한국인과 독일인 한국어 학습자의 불평 화행 수행 여부와 불평 표현 선택 양상에 미치는 영향을 비교·분석하였다. 이를 위해 사회적 거리(극소, 친, 극친)와 사회적 지위(화자<청자, 화자=청자, 화자>청자)를 교차시킨 18개 상황의 담화완성과제를 실시하고, 한국인 30명과 독일인 한국어 학습자 30명의 응답을 이항 로지스틱 회귀분석과 서열 로지스틱 회귀분석으로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 불평 화행 수행 여부에서는 고맥락·저맥락 문화 차이가 뚜렷하게 나타났는데, 고맥락 문화권인 한국인은 극친 관계에서 불평 수행을 자제한 반면, 저맥락 문화권인 독일인 한국어 학습자는 사회적 거리가 가까워질수록 불평 수행 가능성이 증가하였다. 한편 불평 표현 선택에서는 기대와달리 두 집단 모두 비교적 직접적인 표현을 빈번하게 선택하여, 수행 여부와 표현 선택이 서로 다른 차원의 의사결정 과정임이 확인되었다. 또한 사회적 변인의 영향력 비교 결과, 사회적 지위의 영향은 제한적인 반면 사회적 거리가 불평 화행 수행과 표현 선택을 보다 강하게 설명하는변인으로 나타났으며, 특히 한국인 집단에서는 세대 요인이 권력관계보다 중요한 설명 요인으로 작용했을 가능성이 시사되었다.

This study examines how social distance and social status affect complaint speech acts’ performance and expression among native Korean speakers and German Korean learners. A discourse completion test with 18 situations crossing social distance (distant, familiar, and intimate) and social status (speaker<hearer, speaker=hearer, and speaker>hearer) was conducted with 30 Korean speakers and 30 German learners. Responses were analyzed using binary and ordinal logistic regression. Results showed clear high- versus low-context cultural differences in complaint performance: Generally, Korean speakers did not complain in intimate relationships, while German learners complained as social distance decreased. Contrary to expectations, both selected relatively direct complaint expressions; thus, the decision to complain and choice of expression follow different pragmatic processes. Social distance was a stronger predictor than social status; thus, relational factors shape power relations more effectively than complaint behavior. (Ewha Womans University, Seokyeong University)
