진주오광대 탈의 조형 분석과 현대 탈 제작 전승 방안

Morphological Analysis of Jinju Ogwangdae Masks and Strategies for Contemporary Mask-Making and Transmission

본 연구는 진주오광대 탈의 조형적 특징을 규명하고, 이를 토대로 현대 적용 가능한 탈 제작 및 전승 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 경남 지역에 전승되는 가산⋅진주⋅통영⋅고성오광대 탈을 비교 대상으로 삼아, 문헌 조사, 실물 및 사진 자료 분석, 제작자 인터뷰를 통해 제작 시기와 재료, 제작 기법, 배역별 조형 요소를 종합적으로 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 네 지역 오광대 탈은 바가지⋅한지⋅나무⋅대나무 바구니 등 유사한 재료와 기본 공정을 공유하면서도, 재료 선택과 틀 구조, 입체 구조 형성에서 상이한 양상을 보였으며, 특히 진주오광대 탈은 종이와 박을 중심으로 석고틀과 계단식 박 조형 기법을 활용하는 등 복원과 현대 공연 환경을 고려한 제작 방식이 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 또한 오방신장, 문둥이, 영노 등 핵심 배역 비교를 통해, 오방신장과 문둥이 탈의 경우, 동일한 기능과 배역 체계를 공유하면서도 얼굴 비례, 윤곽, 선과 색채 운용에서 진주오광대 탈의 변별적 조형성이 확인되었다. 이에 본 연구는 배역별 ‘기준형 탈’ 조형 도식의 정리, 전통형과 전통 양식 기반 창작형의 구분, 전승 교육 체계화, 디지털 기록⋅아카이브 구축을 통한 전승 강화의 필요성을 제시하였다. 이러한 논의를 통해 진주오광대 탈이 고정된 양식이 아닌, 동시대적 실천 속에서 재구성되는 살아 있는 무형유산으로 이해될 수 있도록 기여하고자 한다.

This study investigates the morphological characteristics of Jinju Ogwangdae masks and explores contemporary strategies for their production and transmission, using the masks of Gasan, Jinju, Tongyeong, and Goseong Ogwangdae in the Gyeongsangnam-do region as comparative cases. Based on literature review, analysis of extant masks and photographic materials, and interviews with mask makers, it examines materials, techniques, and role-specific morphological elements, revealing shared use of gourd, hanji, wood, and bamboo alongside differences in material selection, supporting frameworks, and three-dimensional construction. In particular, Jinju Ogwangdae masks—primarily employing paper and gourd with plaster molds and stepped gourd construction—embody both the restoration of traditional forms and responses to modern performance conditions, while key roles such as Obang Sinjang and Mundung-i show distinctive facial proportions, contours, and uses of line and color. On this basis, the study proposes role-specific “standard mask” schemata, a distinction between traditional-type and creative masks grounded in traditional stylistic principles, and transmission strategies including structured educational programs and digital archiving, thereby positioning Jinju Ogwangdae masks as living intangible heritage continuously reconfigured in contemporary practice.
