본 논문은 『만다라』에 나타난 김성동의 서사적 정체성을 분석한 논문이다. 김성동은 시대의 역사를 개인적 아픔으로 간직한 채 어린 시절부터 자유를 억압당하였다. 그는 미래를 꿈꿀 수 없었으며 자신이 누구인지, 무엇을 해야 할지를 두고 방황하기 시작하였다. ‘어떻게 살아가야 하는가’의 화두는 ‘나는 누구인가’라는 존재론적인 물음이 되어 그를 과거로 이끌었다. 그가 과거와 만날 수 있는 방법은 글쓰기를 통해서이다. 김성동은 글쓰기에 지나간 것의 현재, 현재적인 것의 현재, 다가올 것의 현재, 세 겹의 현재를 배치하여 그의 삶의 가치가 변하는 과정을 담아냄으로써, 과거와 현재를 성찰하고 미래로 나아갔다. 본 논문 2장과 3장에서 법운과 지산이 소설 속 인물로, 독자로 텍스트를 통해 성찰하는 모습을 분석하였다. 『만다라』에서 인물들의 관계는 ‘이야기’를 배치하는 장치로 두 가지 방식으로 나타난다. 하나는 지산의 질문과 회상을 중심으로 법운이 자신의 내면으로 침잠함으로써 자신의 과거를 현재화하여 성찰하는 방식으로, 또 하나는 지산의 말과 행동, 잡기장을 통해 법운이 그에게 동화된 자기 자신을 성찰하는 방식으로 구성된다. 법운은 지산의 이야기를 내적 독백으로 자신의 이야기 속으로 흡수하여 전달한다. 결국 『만다라』는 법운의 1인칭 서술로 그의 정체성을 형성해 가는 이야기가 된다. 4장은 작가로서, 독자로서의 김성동이 자신의 정체성을 형성해 가는 과정에서 『만다라』의 의의를 밝히고 있다. 방황하던 시기에 김성동은 글을 쓰기 시작했으며, 『만다라』를 통해 끊임없이 방황과 성찰을 반복하면서 차안으로 향하였다. 『만다라』는 자신을 이해하고, 부모님을 이해하는 단계로 나아가 윤리적 실천을 할 수 있는 원동력이 되었다. 이처럼 『만다라』는 김성동의 삶의 방향성을 제시한 작품으로써 의의를 가진다.

This thesis analyzes Kim Seong-dong's narrative identity in the 『Mandara』. Kim Seong-dong was suppressed with freedom from childhood, keeping the history of the times as personal pain. He could not dream of the future, and he began to wander about who he was and what to do. The topic of ‘How to live' became an ontological question of ‘Who am I?' leading him to the past. The way he can meet the past is through writing. Kim Seong-dong reflected on the past and moved on to the future by arranging the present of what was passed, the present of the present, the present of what will come, and the process of changing the value of his life by arranging the threefold present. In Chapters 2 and 3 of this paper, Beopwoon and Jisan were analyzed as characters in the novel and reflected through texts as readers. In the 『Mandara』, the relationship between characters appears in two ways as a device that arranges ‘stories'. One is composed of a way that the Beopun reflects on his past by infiltrating into himself, centering on Jisan's questions and recollections, and the other is composed of a way that the Beopun reflects on himself assimilated with him through Jisan's words, actions, and notepads. Beopun absorbs Jisan's story into his story through an inner monologue and delivers it. In the end, 『Mandara』 becomes a story that forms his identity with the first-person description of Beopun. Chapter 4 reveals the significance of the 『Mandara』 in the process of Kim Seong-dong as a writer and reader forming his identity. During the period of wandering, Kim Seong-dong began to write, and he constantly repeated wandering and reflecting through the 『Mandara』 and headed to the car. The 『Mandara』 became the driving force for ethical practice by moving to the stage of understanding oneself and parents. As such, the 『Mandara』 is significant as a work that presents the direction of Kim Seong-dong's life.
