불투명한 주체들의 ‘함께-살기’ - 최은영 소설집 『쇼코의 미소』 연구

Living Together with Opaque Subjects - A Study of Choi Eun-young's Novel Collection, “Shoko's Smile”

이 논문은 최은영의 소설집 『쇼코의 미소』(2016)를 대상으로 작품에 나타난 인간 존재의 형상이 지닌 특성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이 작품집에 나타난 인간 존재는 자기 인식의 한계를 분명하게 인정하면서 스스로 불투명한 주체가 된다. 특히 회상의 장치를 통해 인간은 자기-일관성이 불가능하며 주체는 타자와의 관계에 의해 구성될 수밖에 없음이 제시된다. 인식의 한계는 서로에게 상처를 주고받는 양상으로도 나타나는데, 이것 역시 서로에게 불투명한 존재이기에 그러하다. 한편 이 소설들에는 얼굴을 들여다보는 행위가 빈번히 등장한다. 얼굴과 표정을 통해 고통과 아픔, 용서와 위로를 전달하는 것이다. 가변적 의미를 지닌 얼굴은 무한의 세계를 구성하는데, 이는 우리 삶이 인간의 취약성과 이질성에 근간함을 보여준다. 작가가 불투명함이나 취약성에 기반하여 인간 존재를 형상화한 것은, 결국 우리 삶의 가장 큰 문제가 자기-동일화의 폭력이라고 보기 때문이다. 『쇼코의 미소』에 실린 소설들은 동일화의 폭력이 개별적 인간의 삶을 어떻게 파괴하는지를 형상화한다. 이러한 폭력을 극복하기 위해서는 존재들의 개별성과 특수성을 외면하지 말고 인식의 한계를 인정하며 타자와 상호의존적 삶을 살아가야 한다. 그 하나의 방식이 ‘함께-살기’이다. 작가는 ‘함께-살기’의 방식을 제시하기 위해, 다양한 초점화를 사용하기도 하고 또 작품 속에서 산 자와 죽은 자의 경계를 무너뜨리기도 한다. 결국 『쇼코의 미소』에 실린 소설들은 불투명한 주체들이 어떻게 함께 살아갈 수 있는지를 구체적으로 형상화하였다고 볼 수 있다. 여기서 작가는 존재들이 서로의 이질성과 타자성을 파괴하지 않고 있는 그대로 인정하면서 평등하게 공존하는 삶을 우리 시대의 새로운 윤리로 제시하고 있다.

This paper examines the characteristics of the human figure depicted in Choi Eun-young's first short story collection, “Shoko's Smile” (2016). The analysis reveals that the human beings depicted in this collection clearly acknowledge the limitations of self-awareness, thereby becoming opaque subjects. This suggests that humans are incapable of self-consistency and that subjects are inevitably constituted through relationships with others. This limitation of perception manifests in the form of mutually damaging wounds, a phenomenon also inherent in the opaqueness of human existence. Furthermore, the act of looking into faces frequently appears in these novels. Through faces and expressions, pain and suffering, forgiveness and comfort are conveyed. The face, with its variable meaning, creates an infinite world, demonstrating that our lives are rooted in human vulnerability and heterogeneity. The author's depiction of human existence, rooted in its opacity and vulnerability, stems from his belief that the greatest problem in our lives lies in the violence of self-identification. The novels in “Shoko's Smile” depict how the violence of identification destroys individual human lives. To overcome this violence, we must not ignore the individuality and specificity of beings, but rather acknowledge the limitations of our perception and live interdependent lives with others. One way to achieve this is through “living together.” To present this approach to coexistence, the author employs various focalizations and even collapses the boundaries between the living and the dead within his works. Ultimately, the novels in “Shoko's Smile” can be seen as concretely depicting how opaque subjects can coexist. Here, the author proposes a new ethic for our time: a life in which beings acknowledge each other's heterogeneity and otherness without destroying them, and coexist equally.
