영화 <화려한 휴가>를 활용한 5.18 민주화운동 수업 사례 개발: 외국인 대학원생을 중심으로

A Case Study on Teaching the May 18 Democratization Movement Using the Film <May 18>: Focusing on Foreign Graduate Students

연구 목적은 외국인 대학원생들의 한국어 능력을 향상시키면서 동시에 한국 근현대사에 대한 이해를 높이기 위해 영화 '화려한 휴가'를 활용한 한국어 수업 사례 연구를 제시하는 것이다. 연구 방법으로 영화 감상 전-중-후 세 단계로 수업을 구성하였으며 특히 영화 감상 후 단계에서는 인상 깊었던 장면이 무엇인지와 영화에 대한 자신의 생각을 글쓰기 과제로 제출하도록 하였다. 연구 결과, 수업 이후에 글쓰기 과제에서 명사 어휘 빈도를 추출하여 시각화하여 분석하였다. 그 결과, 이 수업에 참여한 외국인 대학원생들은 모국의 유사한 역사적 경험과 비교하거나 세계 시민의 관점에서 현대 한국 민주주의 형성에 대한 직·간접적인 통찰을 얻은 것으로 나타났다. 또 5.18 민주화운동의 역사적 맥락을 통해 학생들은 역사적 발전에 있어 정치적 억압에 맞서는 일반 시민들의 용기가 얼마나 중요한지 인식할 수 있는 계기가 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의 제언으로 한국어 교육 분야에서 한국의 근현대사에서 주요한 역사적 사건인 5.18 민주화운동을 넘어, 근현대 한국사를 중심으로 유학생을 대상으로 한 역사 교육에 대한 추가 사례 연구가 활발하게 이루어지길 바란다.

A Case Study study presents a case study of Korean language classes that incorporated the film May 18 to enhance foreign graduate students’ historical understanding of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. The class was organized into three stages: pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing activities. In the final stage, students submitted written reflections in Korean, describing particularly memorable scenes and their thoughts after watching the film. An analysis of these reflections revealed that the participating foreign graduate students either compared the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement with similar experiences in their own countries or gained indirect insights into the development of modern democracy from a global citizen’s perspective. Moreover, the historical context of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement provided an opportunity for students to recognize the significance of ordinary citizens’ courage in shaping history. It is hoped that, in the field of Korean language education, further case studies on history education for international students will be actively conducted, focusing on modern and contemporary Korean history beyond the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.
