부산 조선통신사축제의 공연·재현 양상과 문화 관광 콘텐츠화에 관한 연구 - 유네스코 세계기록유산 등재 이후 변화를 중심으로

A Study on Performances and Historical Re-enactments at the Busan Joseon Tongsinsa Festival and Their Development into Cultural Tourism Content : Focusing on Changes Since Its Inscription on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register

본 연구는 유네스코 세계기록유산 등재 이후 부산 조선통신사축제에서 조선통신사가 어떻게 공연되고 재현되는지, 그리고 이러한 변화가 문화관광 콘텐츠화와 어떤 방식으로 연결되는지를 분석하였다. 부산 조선통신사축제는 국내에서 유일하게 조선통신사를 주제로 하는 축제로서, 한일 교류의 역사 자원을 대중적 경험으로 제시한다는 점에서 의미가 크다. 연구는 2017년 이후 시기의 축제 관련 공식 안내 자료와 공고문, 결과보고서 등 공개 문서를 중심으로 프로그램을 유형화하고, 재현 대상과 형식, 참여 구조, 의미 전달장치의 구성 방식을 비교 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째 행렬 재현은 관람 중심의 장면 제시를 넘어 시민 참여를 전제로 한 참여형 재현으로 강화되는 흐름을 보였다. 둘째 재현의 범위는 행렬에 머무르지 않고 의례와 출항, 항해의 서사를 포함하는 다층 구조로 확장되었으며, 전시와 학술, 체험, 공연을 함께 배치하는 방식으로 수용자의 경험 경로를 다원화하려는 지향이 확인되었다. 셋째 축제 공간은 원도심과 항만을 중심으로 복수의 장소로 확장되며 지역 관광자원과의 접속 가능성을 확대하였다. 다만 체험과 재현 프로그램의 확대가 곧바로 가치 이해로 연결되지는 않으므로, 향후에는 행렬과 의례, 전시와 체험, 공연을 하나의 서사 흐름으로 묶는 동선 설계와 핵심 메시지를 일관되게 제공하는 해설과 안내 체계의 표준화가 요구된다. 본 연구는 공개 자료 기반의 기획 분석이라는 한계를 가지며, 후속 연구에서는 현장 실행 자료와 관람객 조사, 관계자 인터뷰를 결합하여 기획과 실행의 차이와 의미 수용의 조건을 실증적으로 검증할 필요가 있다.

This study examines how the Busan Joseon Tongsinsa Festival has presented Joseon Tongsinsa through performances and historical re-enactments since the 2017 inscription of “Records of Joseon Tongsinsa” on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, and how these changes relate to the festival’s development into cultural tourism content. As the only festival in Korea dedicated to Joseon Tongsinsa, the Busan event offers a notable case in which a historical resource associated with Korea–Japan exchanges is transformed into an accessible public experience. Using publicly available documentary sources such as official festival guides, calls for participation, and annual reports, the study classifies major programs and comparatively analyzes what is being re-enacted, how it is staged, how participation is structured, and how meaning is conveyed through interpretive devices. The analysis indicates three main trends. First, the flagship procession has been strengthened as a participatory form of re-enactment that incorporates citizens as performers and co-producers rather than positioning them solely as spectators. Second, re-enactment has expanded beyond the procession to encompass a multi-layered narrative including rituals, departure, and maritime travel, while exhibitions, academic events, experiential programs, and performances are increasingly arranged to diversify visitor pathways of engagement. Third, festival spaces have extended from the old downtown area toward port-related sites and multiple urban locations, thereby enhancing potential linkages with local tourism resources. However, the expansion of experiential and re-enactment programs does not automatically lead to deeper understanding of the values associated with Joseon Tongsinsa, such as peace and cultural exchange. For more robust content-making, stronger narrative based circulation design and standardized interpretive systems that deliver consistent core messages are required. This study is limited by its reliance on planning-oriented public documents; future research should combine on-site implementation data, visitor surveys, and stakeholder interviews to validate the gap between plans and practice and to identify conditions that support meaningful reception.
