본 연구의 목적은 현대 예배 환경 속에서 축소되거나 변형되고 있는 성가대의 위치를 신학적·예배학적 차원에서 재정립하는 데 있다. 최근 한국교회 예배는 대중문화적 양식과 공연적 요소를 적극적으로 수용하면서 전통적인 성가대의 필요성을 상대적으로 약화시키고 있다. 그러나 성가대는 단순한 예배음악 수행 집단이 아니라, 예배 공동체의 신학적 정체성을 구현하는 중요한 주체라는 점에서 그 존재 의의가 재조명되어야 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 첫째, 성경적 자료를 분석하여 성가대의 신학적 근거를 제시하고, 구약시대의 이스라엘 전통과 신약시대의 교회 공동체 사이의 연속성을 확인한다. 둘째, 교회 역사 속에서 성가대가 형성·발전해 온 과정을 고찰하여 성가대가 예배의 본질적 요소로 기능해 왔음을 논증한다. 셋째, 예배 신학적 관점에서 성가대의 역할을 평가하고, 성가대가 예배의 미적 장식이 아니라 공동체의 신앙을 고백하고 형성하는데 필요한 핵심적 요소임을 밝힌다. 마지막으로, 현대 예배 현장에서 성가대가 회중의 능동적 참여를 촉진하고, 예배 공동체의 영적 정체성을 심화시키는 실제적 역할을 감당해야 함을 제언한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 본 연구는 성가대를 단순한 음악적 기능을 넘어 예배 공동체의 정체성을 형성하는 신학적 목소리로 규명하며, 예배학 연구의 지평에서 성가대의 학문적·실천적 가치를 재조명하는데 기여하고자 한다.

The purpose of this study is to re-establish the theological and liturgical position of the choir, which is being diminished or transformed in the contemporary worship environment. Recently, Korean church worship has actively embraced popular cultural styles and performance elements, relatively weakening the need for traditional choirs. However, the choir is not simply a group performing worship music; rather, its significance as a crucial entity embodying the theological identity of the worship community must be reexamined. To this end, this study first analyzes biblical data to present the theological basis for the choir and confirms the continuity between the Israelite tradition of the Old Testament and the church community of the New Testament. Second, it examines the formation and development of the choir throughout church history, arguing that it has functioned as an essential element of worship. Third, it evaluates the role of the choir from a theological perspective, demonstrating that the choir is not merely an aesthetic decoration of worship, but rather a crucial element necessary for confessing and forming the community's faith. Finally, we suggest that choirs in contemporary worship settings should play a practical role in fostering active congregational participation and deepening the spiritual identity of the worship community. Through these reflections, this study identifies the choir as a theological voice that shapes the identity of the worshiping community, transcending mere musical function. It aims to contribute to re-examining the academic and practical value of the choir within the horizon of liturgical studies.
