Objectives: This study aimed to determine the optimal concentration ratio of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) incorporated into commercial glass ionomer cement (GIC). The effects of CeO2 addition on the Vickers hardness, antibacterial activity, and cytotoxicity of the GIC composites were evaluated. Methods: Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2) were incorporated into commercial GIC at different weight percentages (wt%): 0.5%, 1%, and 2%. Specimens were then fabricated to evaluate Vickers hardness, antibacterial activity (against Staphylococcus aureus), and cytotoxicity. Results: The incorporation of CeO2 into GIC (Ce_GIC) maintained mechanical properties while enhancing antibacterial activity against S. aureus and improving cell viability. Significant antibacterial effects were observed at all Ce_GIC concentrations (0.5-2%), and higher cell survival rates were noted at 1% and 2% concentrations. Conclusions: Therefore, these results suggest that as the concentration of CeO2 nanoparticles in GIC increases, mechanical properties are improved and bioactivity(specifically antibacterial activity and cell viability) is enhanced.
