Analysis of Oral Health Screening Rate and Dental Care Utilization Using Health Screening Cohort Data

Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of oral health screening results on dental care utilization to confirm screening effectiveness and promote higher participation rates in future screenings. Methods: Data were obtained from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) health screening cohort and included 1,697,648 individuals with health screening records from 2016 to 2019. Results: Periodontal treatment was 1.37 times more likely to occur when screening revealed severe inflammation, while scaling was 1.70 times more likely when no inflammation was present. Conservative treatment increased 1.27-fold when screening revealed dental caries and 1.48-fold with proximal caries. Tooth extraction was 1.85 times more likely with prior tooth loss and 0.66 times less likely without it. Conclusions: Providing necessary dental services to those identified through oral health screening may help improve screening participation rates.
