Influence of Dental Hygienists’ Medical Dispute Experiences on Their Perceptions of Medical Disputes

Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the impact of dental hygienists’ experiences with medical disputes on their perceptions of medical disputes. The growing frequency and complexity of dental treatments have expanded the role of dental hygienists beyond clinical assistance to include patient communication, education, and counseling, thereby increasing exposure to disputes. By assessing awareness of accidents and disputes, this study provides foundational data for enhancing legal awareness and preventive education. Methods: An anonymous online survey was conducted via Google Forms from October 3-29, 2024, targeting 102 dental hygienists in clinics and hospitals in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 28.0 with frequency analysis, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis, at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Perceptions of medical disputes showed significant differences according to work experience and average patient volume. Significant positive correlations were also found among perceptions of dispute occurrence, difficulties in resolution, resolution strategies, and preventive measures. Conclusions: Reducing medical disputes in dental care requires strengthening dental hygienists’ legal awareness through systematic education and provision of resources. Greater understanding of dispute causes, resolution methods, and prevention strategies can enhance patient safety and reinforce professional responsibility.
