한국의 신선지명[神仙地名]을 형성한 신선 전설의 서사구조와 문화유산적 의의

Narrative Structure and Cultural Heritage Significance of Sinsun Legends Underlying Korea’s Sinsun Toponyms

한국의 신선 관련 지명의 문화유산적 의미를 도교 이념과 지역 구전 전통의 상호작용에 초점을 두고 고찰하였다. 한국을 비롯한 아시아권에서 도교는 민속적 관습과 자연의 조화와 초월이라는 이상을 통합한다. 신선 전설(불멸 또는 초월적 존재에 대한 이야기)에서 유래한 지명은 지역적 정체성과 역사적 연속성을 반영한다. 연구 대상 7개의 자연 마을은 각각 두 가지 기준, 즉 구전으로 전승되는 신선 전설의 존재 여부와 마을 지명과의 연관성을 충족한다. 본 연구는 민족지학적 방법을 활용해 구전 전승, 문화유산적 의미, 그리고 보존 필요성을 평가한다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 서사적 불완전성에도 불구하고 중심 인물은 전형적으로 “신성한 신선”으로 등장하며, 이는 마을 기원의 신성성을 강조한다. 전설은 자연과의 조화, 공동체의 회복력, 그리고 번영에 대한 열망에 중점을 둔 세계관을 전달한다. 산, 계곡, 연못 등 언급된 랜드마크는 역사적으로 존재했으며, 이는 본래 구전 전통의 회복을 뒷받침한다. 그러나 방치와 도시화로 인해 이러한 흔적이 소실되거나 훼손되어 보존의 시급성이 요구되었다.

This study examines the cultural significance of Sinsun-related toponyms in Korea, focusing on the interplay between Taoist ideology and local oral traditions. Taoism in Korean and broader Asian contexts integrates folk practices with ideals of natural harmony and transcendence. Place names derived from Sinsun legends—narratives of immortal or transcendent beings—reflect regional identity and historical continuity. Seven natural villages were selected, each meeting two criteria: the presence of a specific orally transmitted Sinsun legend and its association with the village toponym. Using ethnographic methods, the study assesses oral transmission, cultural meanings, and preservation needs. Findings show that, despite narrative incompleteness, the central figure typically appears as a “divine Sinsun,” emphasizing the sacred character of village origins. The legends convey a worldview centered on harmony with nature, communal resilience, and aspirations for prosperity. Referenced landmarks—mountains, valleys, and ponds—historically existed, supporting recovery of original oral traditions. Neglect and urbanization, however, have caused loss or deterioration of these traces, underscoring the urgency of preservation.
